2011 French Open: Jurgen Melzer, Ivan Ljubicic proceed to the second round
Jurgen Melzer beats Andreas Beck 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
Last year’s semi-finalist, Austrian Jurgen Melzer thrashed Andreas Beck of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of French Open at Roland Garros in Paris on Tuesday. Melzer needed just an hour and 58 minutes
to undo his opponent in a one-sided clash.
The Austrian broke Beck in the second game of the first set and held his serve in the next game, blazing to a 3-0 lead. Melzer consolidated on the single break of serve and served out the set at 5-3. The world number 8 hit seven
winners and committed the same number of unforced errors in the first set.
Melzer needed a single break of serve in the second set, claiming it 6-4. The left-handed fired three aces and 61 percent of the first serves, converting 79 percent of them into points in the second set. The Austrian capitalized
on one of the two break point opportunities he created on Beck’s serve and saved all the three break points on his own serve in the second set.
Beck took an early lead in the third set as he broke his opponent in the second game for a 2-0 lead. After that, it was all Melzer show as the Austrian claimed six straight games, breaking the German three times and bagging the
set 6-2.
The 30-year-old will face Czech Lukas Rosol, ranked 111th in the world, in the second round.
Ivan Ljubicic ousts Somdev Devvarman 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
World number 37 Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia cruised past Indian number 1 Somdev Devvarman, ranked 66th in the world, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round. The match lasted for two hours and two minutes.
Devvarman drew first blood, breaking the Croatian in the third game and holding his serve in the next game to take a 3-1 lead. However, Ljubicic bounced back and claimed five of the next six games, breaking the Indian in the eighth
and tenth game to win the set 6-4.
In the second set, both players held their serve in the first seven games and took the score to 4-3 in favour of Ljubicic. The Croatian broke his opponent in the eighth game and served out the set in the next game, grabbing it
6-3. The former world number 3 converted the only break point he received in the second set.
Ljubicic broke the Indian after a marathon opening game in the third set and consolidated on it, taking a 2-0 lead. The right-handed did not all Devvarman to break back in the rest of the set, serving out the set at 5-4.
The six feet and four inches tall will play American Sam Querrey, seeded 24th at the event, in the second round.
