2011 French Open: Roger Federer defeats Maxime Teixeira in the second round
2009 French Open champion, Swiss Roger Federer blasted away local wildcard entrant Maxime Teixeira in straight sets on Wednesday to continue his ascent at the 2011 Roland Garros. Taking a little over two hours, Federer secured
a6-3, victory over the lower ranked local.
Seeded third at the event, the Swiss maestro is contesting in his twelfth straight year here at Stade Roland Garros. Although a finalist many times, Federer has only managed the prestigious title win here only once in 2009 when
he defeated the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.
Going through a slump recently, the Swiss maestro needs to shine here in order to restore some lost pride – a title win here would do much for that cause. Starting his ascent here on Monday, Federer met and defeated Spaniard Feliciano
Lopez in straight sets to move ahead. Teixeira joined the Swiss in the second round after doing away with compatriot Vincent Millot in the opening round.
In their first match ever, both players started on almost equal footing. Although Federer caught an early break in the opener to lead 2-0, the inexperienced local soon broke back to level the score at 3-3. Another lucky break
in the eighth game put Federer serving out the set at 5-3. A powerful ace and a couple of well placed winners put Federer in the lead in the set score.
Scoring an acceptable 76% on his first serve along with three aces and thirteen winners, Federer clinched the first set 6-3.
A set loss to the former world number one seemed to have shattered the local’s confidence completely. Outclassed and a complete mismatch, Teixeira failed to win a single game in the second set as the Fed Express raced to a splendid
bagel set victory in less than thirty minutes. The Swiss registered a hundred percent win on his first serve belting across the court 14 winners and 2 aces.
Continuing his decimation of the local, Federer raced to a 5-1 lead in the third set. Serving for the set at 5-2, an unforced error from the local allowed the Swiss a 6-2 victory, sealing the latter’s straight sets victory.
Federer moves on ahead to play either Serb Janko Tipsarevic or Spaniard Pere Riba.
