2011 French Open: Sorana Cirstea breezes into second round after downing Patty Schnyder
A former top twenty-five player, Romanian Sorana Cirstea slew a former top ten, Swiss Patty Schnyder with a breadstick to advance into the second round of the 2011 Roland Garros, a major clay court tournament held in Paris, France.
The 32-year-old Swiss barely survived the opening set on Tuesday.
The Romanian, who reached the quarter-finals here two years ago, registered an assuring 6-1, 6-3 success against Schnyder and sealed the deal in just one hour to book a second round spot at Stade Roland Garros.. The Swiss lad barely
a posed any threat and was easily swept away by Cirstea who dominated throughout the match.
21-year-old Stormed into the opening set and easily held entire serves through her amazing agility. She saved all five breakpoints with her awesome defensive skills and converted both breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to
pocket a breadstick. The Romanian produced a similar first serve share of 52 percent and registered an exceptional 79 percent win on it.
The youngster carried her winning ways into the final set and held her opening serve plausibly. Cirstea lost two serves but quickly roared back by breaking Swiss’ serves three times to eventually clinch the set with a 6-3 score
line. To spice it further, she clobbered only nine unforced errors and hammered fifteen winners to Schnyder’s eight. The Romanian produced a lower first serve share but earned a fascinating 71 percent win on it
Currently ranked at 99 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Cirstea won the title at Cagnes-Sur-Mer ITF earlier this month. Thus she entered this event beamingly in full confidence. She won seven out of her last ten matches
and is in good shape now after having a drastic start of season.
World number 55 Schnyder, on the other hand, has had a terrible season so far. She exited from either first or second round from all events she participated earlier except at Dubai. After this defeat, she extends her losing streak
to four matches.
Cirstea will next face her countrywoman, Alexandra Dulgheru. The 27th seeded Romanian trashed Spanish Laura Pous Tio in straight sets to reach this spot.
Dulgheru hammered twenty-four winners, saved four out of eight breakpoints faced and converted seven out of seventeen breakpoint opportunities to her advantage. She also smacked three ferocious aces to clinch the match with 6-3,
6-4 win over the Spaniard in ninety-seven minutes to advance.
