2011 Handball Championship enters knockout stage; 8 teams cruise into quarterfinals – Handball News
The ongoing 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship has entered the knockout stage. The tournament which is taking place in Brazil has been an interesting one since the start. It will be held from December 2 to December 18, 2011.
After an exciting round of matches among teams belonging to four groups, the tournament has entered into the knockout stage. The round of sixteen began from December 11, 2011 where the sixteen teams which entered were Russia, Iceland,
Sweden, France, Angola, South Korea, Japan, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Romania, Croatia, Spain, Montenegro, Cote d’Ivoire an Brazil.
Russia was successful in its match against Iceland when he defeated Icelanders 30-19. This ended Iceland’s journey in the 2011 World Championships, which were the first time when Iceland participated in the tournament.
France won their match against Sweden when the French handball team won the match 26-23. Angola, who has been a tough competitor in past tournaments, won a narrow victory against South Korea with scores of 30-29. Denmark were also
successful by beating Japan 23-22.This was also a narrow win by the Danish handball players. Norway continued to show their dominance in the tournament with a win over Netherlands. This was a win which would boost Norway’s moral in the competition.
Norway won their match 34-22 which was a convincing win indeed for the Norwegian handball players. Another close match in the round of sixteen was held between Romania and Croatia. Both teams were eager to make their way into the
quarter finals. Romania has won gold medals twice in the GF World Cup but they were not able to score a win over Croatia. The Croatians clinched the match 28-27 and ended Romanian handball players’ hopes to enter into the next round of the competition.
Another convincing win was scored by Spain when they faced Montenegro. Spain played a controlled match and defeated Montenegro 23-19. The last match of the round of sixteen was played between hosts Brazil and Cote d’Ivoire. This
match was also an interesting one as Brazil continued to make their presence felt in the competition. Cote d’Ivoire had no chance to get a lead as Brazil won the match 35-22. After the conclusion of the round of sixteen matches, the eight teams which will
now play the quarterfinals include Russia, France, Angola, Denmark, Norway, Croatia, Spain and Brazil.
