2011 Heineken Open: David Ferrer ousts Philipp Kohlschreiber on his way to the semis
The 28-year-old David Ferrer of Spain has reached the semi-final round of the 2011 Heineken Open tournament on Thursday. The right hander got the better of eighth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in three sets to confirm his spot in
the final four round. The final match score was 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3. The battle lasted for a time period of two hours and forty three minutes. It was the pair’s ninth encounter on the tour.
"It was another tough match, I am very happy. It is nice to win and be in the tournament's semi-final. Now I want to relax and enjoy this day and then try to do my best tomorrow”, said the world number seven after his victory on
Thursday.
Ferrer, the 2007 champion, who made his debut on the ATP tour back in 2000, started off his quarterfinal match strongly. He did well to take points at crucial stages of the match and thus emerged victorious in the end.
The top seeded Spaniard won the opening set 6-4, as he did well to convert one of his five break point chances, which made all the difference in the end. Philipp on the other hand, failed to bag any of his four break point opportunities.
Philipp after losing the first set got a break early in the second set, however, the german couldn’t maintain that lead as he was broken during the seventh game by his Spanish foe. Despite losing the set point at 6-5, Philipp did
manage to take the ensuing tiebreak and thus wrapped up the set at 6-7.
Ferrer improved his game further in the decisive set and as a result, once again, dominated right from the start to clinch victory with his third match point.
The Spaniard, who achieved his career high ranking of world number four back in 2008, will next take on the winner of the match between Santiago Giraldo of Colombia and Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in the final four battle on Friday.
