2011 Heineken Open: David Ferrer topples Tobias Kamke to reach quarters
28-year-old David Ferrer of Spain has made his way into the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Heineken Open men’s singles tournament on Wednesday.
The right-hander got the better of his German opponent Tobias Kamke in three sets to confirm his spot in the final-eight round. He won the match 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in two and a half hours.
Top seed Ferrer was completely shocked by the German in the opening set as Kamke started off extremely well and played some impressive tennis to take the first set 6-3.
After losing the first set, former world number four Ferrer improved his game and came back strongly by using all his experience against Kamke. He quickly broke his opponent’s serve at the start of the second set. However, the enthusiastic Kamke did not
lose hope and blasted some superb shots around the court. He was pushed backward by the Spaniard after he gave away a set point chance at 5-6, followed by a tiebreaker which Ferrer won to take the battle to the decider.
In the final set, Ferrer maintained his lead and in the end, sealed win with an ace on match point.
By virtue of this victory, top seed Ferrer will take on another German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarters. Philipp made his way into the final-eight round after thrashing out Marcel Granollers of Spain in three sets. The final match score was 6-4, 3-6,
6-2. Philipp blasted ten aces against his opponent to reach the quarters.
While commenting on his next round opponent, Ferrer said, “He is a difficult player. I will need to play a focussed game and receive better. I think it will be a physical match.”
Meanwhile, Nicolas Almagro of Spain also advanced into the quarters in Auckland after beating his Romanian foe Victor Hanescu in two sets. The final score was 6-4, 7-6. This is the second occasion in the last three years that the Spaniard has reached the
quarters at the Heineken Open.
