2011 Heineken Open: David Nalbandian makes his way into quarterfinals
Former world number three David Nalbandian of Argentina has reached the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Heineken Open. The right hander overpowered his German opponent Philipp Petzschner in straight sets with a score line of 6-3,
6-2 in Auckland. The battle concluded in a time period of sixty three minutes.
"I played very good tennis today: it was much better than yesterday and it will give me confidence,'' said the Argentinean after the match.
Nalbandian, as a result of this victory, has joined Thomaz Bellucci, Philipp Kohlschreiber, David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro as well as David Ferrer into the quarters.
The right hander broke his opponent’s game once during the start of the opening set and dominated the match from then on with the help of his strong forehands. He blasted a total of three aces in the first set before clinching
a lead of 6-3.
The second set did not change the story for the German as Nalbandian continued to dominate and put pressure on Philipp. He did well to break his opponent twice in the decider and thus wrapped up the set at 6-2 to emerge victorious
in the end.
Philipp failed to pose any trouble for Nalbandian and committed numerous unforced errors throughout the match.
Nalbandian, by virtue of this victory, will face the winner of the match between Robin Haase and John Isner from the United States of America.
Meanwhile at the Medibank International, Gilles Simon of France also posted a two setter victory over Frederico Gil in Auckland. The final match score was 6-1, 6-3. The Frenchman, as a result of this win, has also made his way
into the quarterfinal round at the Heineken Open event.
Moreover, tournament’s top seed David Ferrer also got the better of his German foe Tobias Kamke in three sets. The final score line was 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Philipp Kohlschreiber also registered his name in the quarterfinal line up on
Wednesday, by virtue of his three set victory over Marcel Granollers of Spain. The final match score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
