2011 Hobart International: Roberta Vinci thrashes Elena Baltacha to reach quarters
Roberta Vinci of Italy got the better of the 27-year-old Elena Baltacha from England in two sets in a rain-interrupted second round clash at the 2011 Hobart International competition on Thursday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
“It has been a bit of a strange week. I do not think I have been at a tournament with so much rain, certainly not in Australia. To be honest, though, seeing the images of what’s happening in Queensland you put everything in perspective. It is really not
that bad, at the end of the day we are only playing a tennis match. Considering how ill I was at Christmas and that I had to miss Auckland, I am very positive about what has happened this week,” said the top-ranked Baltacha after the match.
When the match resumed on Thursday, Vinci without wasting any time, wrapped up the second set at 6-4 to quickly seal the win.
The Italian, by virtue of this victory, has joined Sara Errani, Angelique Kerber and Klara Zakopalova in the quarterfinal line-up.
On the other hand, world number 55 Elena, will now take part in the Australian Open 2011 starting in Melbourne from Monday. She reached the third round of the 2010 event before eventually bundling out of the event.
While commenting on her overall performance in the tournament, Elena said, “I think I had a good week. I had a good win over Tammie Tanasugarn, she is a tricky player but I played well. And then today though I lost I thought I played some good stuff, she
just played better and you have to say well done. The second set was much better than the first and I was much more aggressive and really started to open up.”
In other action, Klara Zakopalova posted a three-set win over her Italian opponent Alberta Brianti earlier in the day. She won 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 while Sara Errani dispatched off local favourite Alicia Molik, 6-1, 6-0. Alla Kudryavtseva was bundled out of the
event at the hands of Angelique Kerber with a score line of 6-3, 6-4.
