2011 Hong Kong Tennis Classic: Vera Zvonareva thrashes Caroline Wozniacki
Top seed, Vera Zvonareva of Russia annihilated world no.1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, with a 6-1, 6-0 straight sets win at the Victoria Park stadium in Hong Kong. Dropping one game, it was a matter of 56 minutes before the professional
brought the match to a close.
"It was a great match and I played some good tennis. I'm just happy to be back here in Hong Kong. I'm enjoying the atmosphere -- everyone came here to support us. It was my first two matches out here in Hong Kong to start the season
and I'm definitely excited about it. And the way I played those two matches, I'm very happy, so hopefully I can keep the form and play some good tennis in Australia," stated Vera.
Furthermore, Wozniacki said, "Vera played very well today -- I definitely didn't play to my level. I had some good shots but then I had some very bad shots and the wrong selection of shots. I just need to learn from this one."
Earlier, Venus Williams and John McEnroe of Team Americas won the consolation silver group final for losing semi-finalists, defeating Asia-Pacific's Mark Philippoussis of Australia and Zhang Ling of Hong Kong, 6-2 in the first
set and 7-6 in the set to follow in the Hong Kong exhibition.
Meanwhile, six-time Grand Slam singles champion, Swede Stefan Edberg, won 6-4, 6-0 in the legends singles rubber against Australian Open and French Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia. On the contrary, Maria Kirilenko of
Russia beat Aravane Rezai of France 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3 in the Hong Kong exhibition.
At the end, it was a special day particularly for Zvonareva, who had started playing tennis at the tender age of six. The Russian turned professional in the year 2000 and reached a career high ranking of world no. 2 in October
2010. Furthermore, Vera has bagged 10 Women's Tennis Association singles titles besides appearances at the finals of the WTA Tour championships played in 2008, the 2010 U.S. Open and the 2010 Wimbledon championships. The professional also has a bronze medal
to her name, which was won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
