2011 Hopman Cup: Andy Murray defeats Potito Starace in Perth
Scottish tennis ace Andy Murray posted a straight sets victory over Potito Starace of France in the men’s singles rubber of the 2011 Hopman Cup at the Burswood Dome on Monday. The final match score was 7-5, 6-1.
23-year-old Murray played with a high level of maturity and did not lose patience until his opponent committed some unforced errors to make things easier for the Brit towards the end of the opening set. Murray broke early in the second set to win the match
comfortably after 79 minutes.
Murray's win levelled the Hopman Cup at 1-1 as the 2010 French Open winner Francesca Schiavone got the better of British teenager Laura Robson in two sets earlier in the day. The final match score was 7-5, 6-3.
The tie between the fourth seed Italians and second seed Britons will now be decided in the mixed-doubles match to be played later in the day.
Andy Murray, who made his debut on the ATP tour back in 2005, took some time to wrap up the opening set against his 47th ranked counterpart. Both the contenders played some strong groundstrokes before the Scott eventually turned things around
and won the first set. Potito made a couple of unforced errors whereas Andy capitalised on his second break point to clinch the opening set in fifty minutes.
World number four made a quick start to the second set and despite the fact that Starace managed to force some deuces, Murray remained composed to earn a lead of 2-1 before eventually breaking his opponent in the next game.
There was no looking back for the top-ranked Brit after that and he took a lead of 5-1 in no time before closing out the match comfortably.
