2011 Irish Long Course National Championships - Women’s events: Day 4 Recap
Final session of the 2011 Irish Long Course Championships concludes after dynamic swims of Irish swimmers at the National Aquatic Centre on May 1, 2011.
The session observed tremendous efforts of Sycerika McMahon, Melanie Nocher and Catrina English in their individual events. Whereas, McMahon claimed three gold titles on the last day of the championship in the events of 100m butterfly, 200m Individual Medley
(IM) and the 50m freestyle.
The arena enjoyed stupendous effort of LEA’s McMahon in the 100m butterfly, occupying the gold medal with a timing of 1:02.06 minutes. WAT’s Shauna O’ Brien and LIMK’s Shauna Smith joined her on the podium for silver and bronze medal, clocking a time of
1:02.41 and 1:02.57 minutes.
Then, the arena witnessed miraculous efforts of Melanie Nocher, Aisling Cooney and Chelsey Wilson, who posted a time under the junior Irish benchmark of 2:19.45 minutes. Nocher claimed the gold medal by her unreachable 2:12.25 minutes efforts. She was followed
by ESB-IRL’s Cooney and ENSK’s Wilson, who climbed the podium for silver and bronze medal in a time of 2:17.45 and 2:19.21 minutes, respectively.
In the 200m IM, the arena’s favourite, McMahon once again reached the top of podium with her gruelling efforts of 2:17.09 minutes. McMahon, who has already grabbed the gold medal for 100m butterfly was almost three seconds ahead of LISB’s Bethany Carson,
who touched the wall in 2:20.81 minutes for the silver medal. They were followed by GAL’s Saoirse McGrath, who occupied the bronze medal with a timing of 2:26.45 minutes.
Next was the 50m freestyle, where the LEA’s McMahon smashed her third gold medal of the evening, touching the wall first in a time of 27.22 seconds. She was 0.05 seconds ahead of ESB-IRL’s Aisling Cooney, who ensured her silver finish in a time of 27.27
seconds. ARDS’s Melanie Nocher reached the podium for bronze medal with a timing of 27.33 seconds.
200m breast-stroke was the last event of the session, where Catrina English obtained the gold medal for her 2:43.64 minutes effort. She was followed by TEMP-LE’s Niamh Bryson and NRS’s Lydia Kehoe, who followed her on the podium for the silver and bronze
medal, posting a time of 2:44.79 and 2:53.38 minutes, respectively.
McMahon was declared as the best swimmer of the championships, as she conquered more than 7 gold medals at this championships. McMahon said that she will continue such efforts to make her country proud at the upcoming world stages including 2011 World Championships
and 2012 London Olympics.
