2011 MLB Season Round Up: New York Yankees crush Cleveland Indians 3-1 - Part-1
In their road to the World Series, the New York Yankees were dominant but not every time. They had to face two series defeats from rivals Boston Red Sox and they were to move forward for their first four-game series against the Cleveland Indians.
Game 1: Yankees shows perfect retaliation to nip losing streak
The Bronx Bombers comprehensively beat the League rivals Cleveland Indians 11-7 in a thrilling series-starter, at Yankee stadium, on Friday, June 10. The Yankees were facing regular mocking after embarrassing defeats by the Red Sox but this diversion took
them back on track.
Every batter made his contribution. Mark Teixeira went for 1-for-2 and scored three RBIs while Alex Rodriguez launched off Francisco Carmona of the Indians. Curtis Granderson launched his 19th home-run of the season against Carmona in the second
inning on two outs. Jorge Posada, Granderson and Rodriguez each scored RBIs when two of their batters had already sent to plate on strike-outs.
An embarrassing moment was seen in the game when Teixeira and Carmona raced towards each other for a fight. Both benches emptied and entered the field but umpires sent them to back to the dugout.
Joe Girardi commented on the situation and said, "I have respect for Manny. I actually had a nice exchange with Manny at 3 o'clock today. But that doesn't mean there's not some feistiness in me and when my guys are getting plunked, I'm going to protect them."
Ivan Nova struck-out six batters, allowed two runs and four hits over seven innings to improve his record to 5-4 with a 4.30 ERA.
Game 2: Yankees shutout the Indians 4-0 for back-to-back wins
The Bronx Bombers used three home-runs to overcome the opposition on the second straight night, of June 11.
Alex Rodriguez hammered on second straight night and torched 429-feet long home-run. Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira also joined the star batter and took the club to a 4-0 win. It was the 20th home-run for Granderson, who entered into the
list of very few Yankees to hit 20 home-runs in their first 60 outings.
"It's not what you want, that's for sure," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "He's pitched extremely well, and we'll kind of keep our fingers crossed."
Colon tossed just over six shutout innings before he left the mound and the outing due to strained left hamstring. While the Indians’ starting pitcher was ejected after he hit Rodriguez in the sixth inning. David Robertson and Boone Logan also threw unplayable
pitching to give the Indians the humiliating defeat.
Yankees were now looking to get the series sweep. Their command over the game was brilliant and it was not difficult for them to take it but the Indians bounced back in the last outing.
