2011 Medibank International: Bernard Tomic bows out in opener
18-year-old Bernard Tomic of Australia has bundled out of the 2011 Medibank International Sydney tennis tournament on Wednesday.
The right-hander could not win his opening round match on his home soil as he was dismissed by Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine in a rain-interrupted battle in three sets. The final match score was 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Tomic started off superbly, looked extremely confident and thus wrapped up the first set 7-6. The professional tennis ace from Ukraine, Alexandr, however after losing the opening set, improved his game and came out strongly afterwards to make things difficult
for the Australian.
After the first set, the match looked like a one-sided affair as the Ukrainian did not let his opponent to bounce back at any stage of the game and in the end sealed a hard-fought win.
Tomic, the Gold Coast resident, who made his debut on the ATP tour back in 2009, is quite satisfied with his current form on the tour despite his early exit. The teenager believes that his successful qualification into the main draw of the Australian Open
2011 is enough to make him play well.
Tomic received the wild card into the main draw on Tuesday. This is the third occasion that the Tennis Australia has given a wild card to Tomic who could not play in the wildcard play-off event because of illness.
While commenting on Tennis Australia’s decision of granting him a direct entry for Australian Open, the world number 208 said, “Look, it is their decision at the end of the day. I cannot decide if I am going to get it or not. I can only do and try to play
tennis as much as I can. Yes, I had a bit of a strange December but now it's January; I played three good matches here.”
He further added, “I have actually beaten three top 100s in a row, and I think this is confidence for me leading into next week. I think the wildcard that they gave, they gave for a reason - obviously saw I was playing well here.”
