2011 Medibank International Sydney: Gilles Simon cruises into semis
The professional tennis ace from France Gilles Simon knocked out his Ukrainian foe Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets in his quarter final match at the 2011 Medibank International Sydney on Thursday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-3. The Frenchman, as a result of this victory, has also made his way into the semi final round of the event.
The right hander will meet Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in the final four round on Friday. It will be the pair’s career first encounter on the tour. The Latvian breezed past Sergiy Stakhovsky in two sets to further advance in the tournament. The score line was 6-4, 6-4.
The current World number 41, who picked up his seventh career crown at the 2010 Open de Moselle, earlier reached the quarters after getting the better of Frederico Gil in Sydney. Alexandr, on the other hand, also posted a straight set win over the number one seed Sam Querrey from the United States of America to confirm his berth in the quarters.
The 1.83 meters tall Simon, who made his debut on the ATP tour back in 2002, started off his quarterfinal match against Alexandr with a high level of confidence. He played well, dominated his opponent throughout the clash and thus emerged victorious in the end.
The French player, who achieved his career highest ranking of World number 6 back in 2009, while commenting on his current form after the match said, “I think I am playing very good now, as good as two years ago. The thing is in tennis it is always a matter of confidence. You have to win some good matches and to beat the top guys. Only one time sometimes, and then you feel the ranking is coming. You are seeded, you are a little bit more protected, and you are playing better and better.
He further added, “That is why I am working hard to come back as soon as possible. I hope to reach Top 30 or Top 20 really as soon as possible because I know it will be better with the draws and everything.”
