2011 Medibank International: Top seed Sam Querrey bundles out
Professional tennis ace from Ukraine Alexandr Dolgopolov upset the top seed Sam Querrey from the US in straight sets at the 2011 Medibank International Sydney on Wednesday.
Dolgopolov won the match 6-4, 6-3 in just over an hour.
Alexandr, as a result of this victory, has made his way into the quarterfinal round of the event. The Ukrainian actually had to play two matches on Wednesday as he first completed his victory over Bernard Tomic in an unfinished clash in the morning, followed
by his three-setter thriller against the American later in the day.
Sam, who was the tournament’s top seed as a result of this loss, joined world number one and top seed Caroline Wozniacki from the women’s side who also bundled out of the event on Tuesday.
Alexandr, after having a tight first set against Sam on Wednesday, looked extremely confident afterwards and thus did well to put pressure on his American foe. Querrey failed to bounce back at any stage of the game after winning the opening set and thus
lost the match in the end.
Meanwhile, Gilles Simon of France also posted a two set win over Frederico Gil, 6-1, 6-3 later in the day. The second seed Polish Lukasz Kubot also bundled out of the event at the hands of Potito Starace of Italy on Wednesday.
Other names who posted victories on Wednesday include Ernests Gulbis, Viktor Troicki and Richard Gasquet. Gulbis got past Igor Andreev in three sets whereas Viktor overpowered Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets. Gasquet also emerged victorious after getting
the better of Andreas Seppi 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
On the women’s side, Li Na of China registered her name as the first player to advance into the semi-final round after thrashing out her Russian foe Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets. She had to battle it out for almost two hours. In the end, she won 3-6,
7-6, 6-3.
“It was a tough match because the conditions were hot today. It is always tough when we play each other. We have played many times. We didn't want to play a long match, but every time we play it's long,” Li said of Kuznetsova after the match.
The world number eleven, will next face the winner of the match between Flavia Pennetta and Bojana Jovanovski.
