2011 Men’s African Nations Championship to start in Morocco – Volleyball news
Following the successful completion of the African women’s competition in Kenya, the 18th edition of the CAVB Men’s African Nations Championship is set to take place in the Moroccan city of Tangier on Friday, September 23. It is an important event
in the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) calendar, which creates an opportunity for young players to grab competition experience.
The biennial tournament is considered the most esteemed of the African men's competitions and it attracts all the big names from across the continent. This year, teams from Algerian, Botswana, Tunisia, South Africa, Cameron, Egypt, Congo, and host Morocco
have been registered for the competition.
The event will progress in group stages and initially teams will be divided into two pools, where each pool will be comprised of four members. The group composition for 2011 Men’s African Championship will be as follows:
Pool A – Cameroon, Morocco, Botswana, and Tunisia Pool B – Egypt, Congo, South Africa, and Algeria
The tournament will provide a qualification ticket to the successful team into the FIVB Men’s World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Japan later this year. Tunisia and Egypt are the pre-favourites of the African championship. Egypt is also the defending
champion the team has clinched success in the last three editions of the tournament. Before that, Tunisia claimed the African title in 2003. Egypt is seeking a fourth consecutive title, while Tunisia aims to return to the top of the podium. Two-time champions,
Cameroon and Algeria, will also be on board to show their thirst for victory and a better status.
The CAVB is very concerned about the success of the men’s African Nations championship. Recently they organised a volleyball clinic in Tangier, which was attended by 42 referees, including the international referees for the African Nations Championship as
well as the local referees from Morocco and line judges. The FIVB instructor and the Secretary of the FIVB Referee Commission, Hassan Ahmed, conducted the activity and supervised all operations.
The attendees were told about the new modifications of the rules in the game. Some of the new official match protocols and various other aspects of the upcoming campaign were discussed.
The 2011 Men’s African Nations Championship is supposed to reveal the final results and standings on Thursday, September 29.
