2011 Montreux Volley Masters comes to an end with Japanese victory – Volleyball news
The exciting women’s volleyball campaign, Montreux Volley Masters, had an amazing run from June 7-12. The event was attended by the Women’s National Volleyball teams from Germany, Cuba, Japan, China, Netherlands, United States, Italy and Peru. The Swiss
town of Montreux experienced a great scene over the last week as volleyball enthusiasts had gathered in great numbers to enjoy their favourite sport. At the end of the tournament teams settled down in following manner:
1. Japan
2. Cuba
3. China
4. USA
5. Netherlands
6. Germany
7. Italy and Peru
The final showdown of the tournament was a hot affair between Japan and Cuba. The Japanese proved to be better and saw off the Cuban team in three sets. Likewise, China dominated United States in the bronze medal match. Elsewhere, Dutch girls beat German
side and got hold of the fifth position in the ranking.
Gold medal match
Japanese women dominated over Cuba in straight sets (26-24, 25-18, and 25-19) and seized the gold medal. It was the second meeting of the Asian and Cuban teams. In the pool stages, Cuba had defeated Japan. However, the final show of the tournament brought
a different fate for the Japanese team. Japan started off slow but gradually picked up pace as Japan pulled off success in opening set and stood on solid ground. Cuba suffered major setbacks on account of their reception errors. Japan captured the second set
with a bigger margin and pushed Cuba farther in back. The NORCECA Champions couldn’t deal with the Asian squad and dropped the third set as well.
Bronze medal match
After losing their matches in the semi-finals, Chinese and American teams competed for the third-position. China held off USA for a 3-1 (16-25, 25-13, 29-27, and 25-23) victory. The American team took a stunning start in the game with an impressive strike.
Their attack was powerful and defense was simply awesome. Chinese squad couldn’t match its performance with their opponents and lost the opening set of the match. The game took a sudden change in the second set and China went up. They picked up the lead and
added quick points to widen the gap. China equaled the score in the second set. Afterwards, the U.S. team couldn’t get its form back and fell into troubled waters. Chinese team kept its dominance in the next two sets and claimed the match.
Fifth-position match
Teams from Germany and Netherlands were featured in the fifth-position classification match. Dutch team proved to be better side and thrashed to a 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-18, 28-26) victory over the rivals side. German team could only capture one set in the
whole match, which was not enough to save them from the loss. Netherland showed its attacking power and rallied past them. Germany was pushed into sixth position as Netherland settled for fifth slot in the rankings.
