2011 Moorilla Hobart International: Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jarmila Groth reach final
The 25-year-old Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the United States of America made her way into the final of the 2011 Moorilla Hobart International on Friday.
The right-hander brushed aside Peng Shuai of China in three sets to confirm her berth in the title battle. She won 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The American did not have an ideal start to her semi-final match, however, after taking some time, she did well to bounce back strongly and thus emerged victorious in the end. After losing the opening set, Bethanie improved her game and played with greater
level of accuracy in the second and third set which looked more like a one- sided affair in the end.
Bethanie, will now take on Jarmila Groth of Australia in the final. It would be her third career singles final on the tour. She previously reached the title battle at Quebec City back in 2008 and 2010, finishing runner-up on both occasions.
Her final opponent on Saturday will be Jarmila Groth of Australia who picked up her first career crown in 2010 at Guangzhou. The Australian advanced into the title battle after getting the better of her fifth seed foe Klara Zakopalova in the second semi-final
match of the day. The final score line was 6-3, 6-2.
Jarmila who is currently ranked number 40 in the South African Airways Women Tennis Association list, while commenting on her performance after the match said, “I am really happy with my performance, the serve is still a trouble but I am having fun so it
is good. I felt this year I had good preparation and was coming in confident with my game.”
Her final run has also secured her a place inside the top fifty in the next WTA rankings regardless of Saturday’s result.
When asked about her title battle, Jarmila, who currently resides in Sydney, added, “It is going to be definitely a very tough night but I will try to play my game, concentrate on what I'm doing right now and hopefully it is going to be enough.”
