2011 Moorilla Hobart International: Jarmila Groth wins her second singles title
Australian Jarmila Groth won the 2011 Moorilla Hobart International crown on Saturday by beating Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the United States of America in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Sixth seeded Groth, has won her career’s second Women Tennis Association singles title on the tour. The 23-year-old, who is currently enjoying her highest career ranking of world number 40, played some impressive tennis right from the start and did not allow
her opponent to put up a fight at any stage of the game. She not only served well but also managed the groundstrokes intelligently to emerge victorious in the end.
Under extremely windy conditions, the right-handed Groth, who made her debut on the WTA tour back in 2005, lost a few points during the start of the opening set. However, after taking some time on the court, Jarmila did well to recover and stay ahead of
her opponent by winning the first set 6-4.
She continued her form in the second set as well. She got the break during the seventh game and took no time to win the next two games in a row to seal a win in the end.
The Australian committed seven double faults throughout the match but made up for them through her strong returns. She broke Mattek’s serve five times during the match.
By winning the event, she has become the first Australian to pick up a title since 2003.
Groth was playing in her second tournament of the 2011 season. She previously took part in the Brisbane International where she reached the quarterfinal stage before being eventually bundled out of the event at the hands of German Andrea Petkovic in two
sets, 3-6, 4-6.
Both Jarmila and Petkovic will now travel all the way to Melbourne to take part in the year’s first grand slam, the Australian Open 2011 which gets underway on Monday.
