2011 Movistar Open: Chilean Jorge Aguilar qualifies for the main draw
Four professionals made their way into the main draw of the 2011 Movistar Open after winning in the finals of the qualifying round. The first player to gain acceptance in the main draw was Chile’s starlet, Jorge Aguilar. Ranked
228th in the world, Aguilar was seeded fifth in the qualifying draw.
Capitalizing on the home crowd advantage, Aguilar lost only one set, sailing his way into the main draw.
After meeting compatriot, Gustavo Kauer in his opening clash, Aguilar fought hard before finally doing away with Kauer in straight sets. His next opponent on the qualifying ladder was Argentinean, Martin Vassallo. Aguilar was able
to move into the final, registering a twin set score of 6-4, 6-4, of the qualifying draw where he was pitted against compatriot, Guillermo Aranguiz.
In his first three setter of the tournament, Aguilar bounced back from being one set down in the match to prevail 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
In a match that lasted almost two and a half hours, Aguilar hit six aces and committed only two double faults to ensure a three set win for himself. The Chilean starlet managed to convert four of eight break points while losing
only 37 of 13 points on service. Aguilar’s first match in the main draw will be against fourth seeded Argentine, Juan Ignacio Chela.
Aguilar will be joined in the main draw by the qualifying round seventh seed, Ricardo Hocevar. In his opening round clash, Hocevar met and dismissed local wildcard entrant, Gonzalo De Urruticoechea in straight sets. The 26-year-old
professional met another Chilean, Ricardo Rivera, in the second round. Hocevar had to fight his way through, with both sets going into tiebreakers. However, the hard-hitting Brazilian was able to register a score of 7-5, 7-4, to secure victory in the tiebreakers.
Much to the dismay of Chile’s tennis fans, Hocevar was pitted against another local in the final of the qualifying round. Playing against Guillermo Hormazabal, Hocevar enjoyed his most impressive win, but lost two games. Hocevar
secured a breadstick win in the first set before securing a spot in the main draw with a 6-2 victory in the second set.
Losing 11 of 38 points on service and converting six of eight break points, Hocevar sailed into the main draw with a no set loss record. His opening clash in the main draw will be against Horacio Zeballos.
Also strolling into the main draw are eight seeded, Facundo Bagnis and unseeded Caio Zampieri.
Although he was one set down in the second round, Bagnis received a walkover into the third round where he played third seed compatriot, Juan Brzezicki. Having struck three aces and converted three of eight break points, Bagnis
moved into the main draw where he will play eighth seeded Colombian, Santiago Giraldo.
Unseeded Zampieri was the last player to gain acceptance in the main draw, as he wrapped up play for the day. After upsetting qualifying round sixth seed, Leonardo Tavares in three sets in the second round, Zampieri met and dismissed
fourth seeded Ivan Navarro in the qualifying final. Zampieri wrapped up his straight sets victory with a 6-4 win in the second set, preceded by a 6-3 victory in the first set.  Zampieri’s opponent in the first round of the main draw will be local wildcard
entrant, Nicolas Massu.
