2011 Movistar Open: Tommy Robredo vs Maximo Gonzales – Quarterfinal Preview
The sixth seed, Spanish Tommy Robredo will be facing Argentinean Maximo Gonzales in the quarterfinal of 2011 Movistar Open at Vina del Mar, Chile on 5th February.
Spain’s Tommy Robredo is 40th ranked in the world while his competitor lays 100 ranks below him. He has won thirteen titles in contrast to nine by the Argentine. Both have faced each other once in which Robredo won a
tiring four set match at the French Open 2009.
The Spaniard has a 60 percent winning record for the last ten matches and 50 percent for last fifty matches. He reached the second round of ATP Auckland. In the Australian Open Grand Slam Tournament, he was in great form and displayed
a great variety of his skills. He won the first three rounds in convincingly including a win over sixteenth seed Mardy Fish. In the fourth round he was defeated by world’s number two seed Roger Federer in a tough four set match. He defended well against the
second seed and won a set against him but was eventually outclassed in the end.
In the ongoing Movistar Open, he is in good shape. He defeated Portugal’s Frederico Gil in plausible match in three sets 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4. In the second round he defeated Brazilian Ricardo Mello in straight sets 6-0 and 7-6 to
reach Quarter-finals. The second set went to tie breaker. The serve point winning percentage in his last match was 70 percent while return point winning percentage was 45 percent.
On the other hand, the Argentinean also has a 60 percent winning record for the last ten matches and 62 percent for the last fifty matches. He is also in good form but due to injuries he was not able to play or continue in many
tournaments. He didn’t even participate in Australian Open. The last full tournament he played was in November 2010 in Guayaquil Challenger where he lost in semi finals. He withdrew from Cancun Challenger and Buenos Aires Challenger due to injuries he sustained.
But he entered the ongoing ATP event fully fit and maximum form and displayed it in his first match in the first round. He defeated the second seed Juan Monaco, fellow Argentinean, in an assuring three set match by 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4. In the second round he
defeated Brazilian Joao Souza in a convincing three set match after losing the first set. The score line was 4-6, 6-3 and 6-1. In this last match, his return points winning percentage was 40 percent and service point winning percent was 70 percent.
Looking at the past match record statistics, Tommy Robredo has higher chances of winning the game. If he unleashes himself, he will be unstoppable but as seen from their last and the only encounter before, Robredo has had high
percentage of unforced errors and double faults which Gonzales can definitely take advantage off and turn the game around.
