2011 NFL Draft Round One (Part 12)
Tyron Smith, offensive lineman from the University of Southern California, was drafted ninth overall by the Dallas Cowboys and continued here, along with University of Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, drafted tenth overall by the Jacksonville
Jaguars in a trade with the Washington Redskins. This is the twelfth part in a series of articles discussing the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York.
A Y-formation is also not a problem for Smith, he can sit back in pass protection and give the quarterback plenty of time to find where he wants the ball to go and get it there. Smith was selected to the First Team All Pac 10 in 2010 as well as an honourable
All Pac 10 mention in 2009. He has had 24 starts in his career with the USC Trojans.
However, when you do watch the tapes for him, you wonder why he is not on the left side because he has everything a left tackle could want. But getting back to the Cowboys, it was the best thing to make that deal since Smith has All-Pro written all over
him. When Smith plays, it’s always against good competition but this is still the first time ever that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has drafted an offensive lineman in the first round of the Draft in his 22 years as owner.
Now the Cowboys have to decide where they want to put Smith and Doug Free. Everyone knows that Free has some trouble at left tackle so the ‘Boys might try Smith at left tackle. Would you experiment with Smith there for a year or two? But since Free is an
unrestricted free agent once a new collective bargaining agreement is made, the first thing the team needs to do is to get him back under contract for at least a year knowing that Smith has been playing right tackle his entire life.
The ‘Boys should put Smith on the right side for at least a year to get him used to playing in the professional league and then bump him over to the left side for the rest of the year, granted that he is able to.
So for the past three and a half months, many analysts have been wondering what the Washington Redskins will do with their tenth overall pick. Would they draft a quarterback or not? But instead of drafting a quarterback, or any player at all, the ‘Skins
traded their tenth overall pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who drafted quarterback Blaine Gabbert from the University of Missouri.
In conclusion, the ninth overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys went to Tyron Smith, offensive lineman from the University of Southern California and the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted University of Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert with their tenth
overall draft pick that they traded for with the Washington Redskins. The remaining article about the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York, will be discussed
