2011 NFL Draft Round One (Part 3)
This is the third part in a series of articles discussing the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York. Von Miller, linebacker from Texas A&M University
and second overall draft pick by the Denver Broncos, was discussed in the second part of the article and is continued here, along with Marcell Dareus, defensive tackle from the University of Alabama, who was drafted third overall by the Buffalo Bills.
Miller knows how to get to the quarterback and that is exactly what the Broncos need. He had the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) highest number of quarterback sacks in 2010 with 17. Miller tested very well in the NFL Scouting Combine, running
the 40 yard dash in 4.53 seconds and recording a vertical jump of 37 inches, making him one of the most athletic linebackers.
Miller is certainly athletic, shows quickness in the shuttle and comes at the quarterback with a vicious attitude. He is versatile and there is no doubt that he will be a major benefit to the Broncos team. When you think about Miller teaming up with Elvis
Dumervil, who was drafted by the Broncos in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Broncos will be a dangerous threat to offenses. That’s exactly what this league is about these days, the defence has to do what it can to make sure that quarterback goes down. With Dumervil
on one side and Miller on the other, offensive coordinators of opposing teams will be losing sleep over who to double team and who to slide to.
Think about the two teams that were in Super Bowl XLV, both of them had the most sacks in the NFL. The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers were first and second, respectively, in terms of sacks. So making sure that your defence is able to take down
the opposing quarterback is a top priority.
Being selected second overall, Miller tied for the highest drafted player out of Texas A&M in the current draft era. As Miller walked out onto the stage to accept his Broncos jersey and hat, it was rather strange watching Miller shake hands with Goodell.
After all, Miller was part of the federal antitrust lawsuit filed by him and nine other players against the league and Goodell but that didn’t stop the two from hugging each other. Both Miller and Goodell have bonded this week, as they have met on several
occasions leading up to the draft. It was an emotional moment for both linebacker and commissioner on the stage of Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
The Buffalo Bills selected Marcell Dareus, defensive tackle from the University of Alabama, with their third overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
In conclusion, the second overall pick owned by the Denver Broncos went to Texas A&M University linebacker Von Miller while the third overall pick owned by the Buffalo Bills went to University of Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus. The remaining
