2011 NFL Draft Round One (Part 6)
Patrick Peterson, defensive back from Louisiana State University, was drafted fifth overall by the Arizona Cardinals and is discussed here. This is the sixth part in a series of articles discussing the first round draft selections in the 2011 National
Football League (NFL) Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York.
The Arizona Cardinals used their fifth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft to select Patrick Peterson, defensive back from Louisiana State University.
The Cardinals were ranked 31st offensively last season in total yards, last in rushing yards, 31st in passing yards and tied for 26th in least points per game. Defensively, they ranked 29th in total yards allowed,
30th in rushing yards allowed, 23rd in passing yards allowed and 30th in average points allowed per game. Now what does picking Peterson tell you about Arizona?
Well Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, general manager Rod Graves and director of player personnel Steve Keim think that they can compete in the National Football Conference (NFC) West. By not picking a quarterback, the Cardinals think that they can sign
a free agent veteran or trade for one with another team, because a quarterback is what the Cardinals seem to need the most.
Instead, they picked Peterson, one of the best defensive players in the draft, and will pair him with cornerbacks Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Greg Toler. Apparently, you can never have too many cornerbacks on one team. Now that the Cardinals have Peterson,
they will most likely be getting him in to work with another talented player on the team, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. This will get him ready to line up against other teams’ most dangerous receivers, such as the Seattle Seahawks’ Mike Williams. Peterson
is a phenomenal guy that just loves to play football.
With the Cardinals’ need at the quarterback position, it lets you know that they feel as though they will make their mark with a quarterback in the second round. In all conferences but especially the NFC West, that quarterback has to win.
We know now that Sam Bradford, number one overall pick by the St. Louis Rams last year and currently their starting quarterback, made a huge stride last year as the season went on and he will probably be playing a lot better this year, presenting a problem
for the Cardinals with their quarterback problems. You just have to compete and get better at the quarterback position but right now, the franchise’s defence needs to be able to cover their opponents and ultimately shut them down.
The Cardinals picking Peterson shows that they will most certainly be doing some major damage with their 38th overall pick in the second round of the draft.
In conclusion, the fifth overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals went to Louisiana State University defensive back Patrick Peterson. The remaining article about the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, held
