2011 NFL Draft Round One (Part 7)
Patrick Peterson, defensive back from Louisiana State University, was drafted fifth overall by the Arizona Cardinals and is continued here, along with University of Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones, who was drafted sixth overall by the Atlanta Falcons
after the Cleveland Browns traded draft picks with them. This is the seventh part in a series of articles discussing the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York.
The Cardinals have drafted 27 of its current players in past drafts, with 20-year old Peterson from Pompano Beach, Florida as their latest addition.
Peterson has had 42 tackles, 1.5 of which were for a loss, and four interceptions during his 2010 season at Louisiana State. Aside from defensive statistics, Peterson has also made 26 punt returns, averaging 16.1 yards per return, along with two touchdowns.
In 2010, he won the Chuck Bednarik Award, recognizing him as the best defensive player that year, as well as the Jim Thorpe Award in 2010, given to outstanding defensive backs in high school and college football.
He was also named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year for the 2010 season as well as the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year for the same season. In his career at Louisiana State, Peterson has made 135 tackles and seven interceptions, making him the fifth
prospect to walk onto the stage and give a bear hug to Goodell, accepting his new Cardinals jersey.
The Cleveland Browns traded their sixth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft to the Atlanta Falcons. With their sixth pick, the Falcons selected Julio Jones, wide receiver from the University of Alabama. The Falcons had a 13-3 record last year and won their
division, the NFC South. Their defence and offense both ranked 16th in the league during the 2010 season. So with Jones going to Atlanta, he leaves behind broken hearts that belong to the St. Louis Rams’ fans, who hoped that Jones would be around
for their 14th overall pick. It also means that quarterback Blaine Gabbert is still available for the San Francisco 49ers to pick him with their seventh overall pick.
22-year old Jones from Foley, Alabama has incredible physical strength and athleticism. At 6-foot-3 and about 218 pounds, Jones is very agile for his size and weight. He uses his weight to pivot and change direction quickly, creating space between him and
the cornerback who is covering him. When he makes receptions, first he widens defenders and then uses his big body like a weak-side rebounder to catch the ball.
In conclusion, the fifth overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals went to Louisiana State University defensive back Patrick Peterson and the sixth by the Atlanta Falcons went to University of Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones. The remaining article
