2011 NFL Draft Round One (Part 8)
Julio Jones, wide receiver from the University of Alabama who was drafted sixth overall by the Atlanta Falcons, is continued here along with University of Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with their seventh
overall pick. This is the eighth part in a series of articles discussing the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York.
Now every single defender hates it when an offensive player hops. What does a deep back do when he hops? He jukes. First Jones makes you wonder where he is going to go and then takes off with his speed, registering 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
Aside from that, since Jones had been coached by Nick Saban, he certainly knows how to block. Falcons’ owner Arthur Blank, general manager Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith made a statement by trading up and a great job was done by general manager
Tom Heckert with the Cleveland Browns for trading down so that they can get more draft picks in later rounds.
Jones’ physicality as a receiver is incredible and it is a great compliment to him being picked sixth overall, and that by a team that won its division and ended the season with a 13-3 record. He will be a valuable asset to wide receivers Michael Jenkins,
Roddy White and to tight end Tony Gonzalez. Quarterback Matt Ryan must also be ecstatic to have such a talented receiver to throw to once the new season starts.
The Falcons have drafted 32 of the players that are on their current roster, with 22-year old Jones from Foley, Alabama as their latest addition. During his 2010 season at Alabama, Jones had 78 receptions for 1,133 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2010, Jones
was selected to Second Team All American and his 179 career receptions for 2,653 yards are the second highest in school history.
His 15 career receiving touchdowns are also a school record, tied for the fourth highest in school history. Jones has also had eight games during his career in which he accumulated over 100 receiving yards per game.
So now we move onto the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, owned by the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners picked University of Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith with their pick. Many people did not believe that the first player from Missouri to be
picked would be Smith. Analysts predicted that Blaine Gabbert, quarterback from Missouri, would be picked way before Smith would.
That’s the way that things developed as the Tennessee Titans looked as though they might draft Gabbert as a replacement for Vince Young.
In conclusion, the sixth overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons went to University of Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones while the seventh by the San Francisco 49ers went to University of Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith. The remaining article about
the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York, will be discussed in the next part of this article. Take a look!
