2011 National Football League Draft Round One - Part 1
The start of the 2011 National Football League Draft showed exactly what fans want at this time from the league.
As soon as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell got up from his seat to take the stage, he was greeted by a tide of boos. Not cheers, boos. What came after explained exactly why this strange reaction took place with fans yelling out, “We want football!” However,
Goodell was a good sport about it and got the message saying, “I hear you.”
Before Goodell got started with the draft, he took a moment to pay his respects on behalf of the NFL to those who lost their lives and loved ones in the tragic storms in the south-western United States. He was joined by players and representatives from Auburn
University and the University of Alabama, including Marcell Dareus, Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Coach Nick Saban, Nick Fairley, Cam Newton and Coach Gene Chizik. Everyone present observed a moment of silence for those that were affected.
With the Number 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers selected Cam Newton, former quarter-back for Auburn University Tigers. Newton is obviously a big time player, considering that he won the Heisman Trophy for his performance during
the 2010 season. He also won the national championship when he was at Blinn Junior College and then went to Auburn to win the 2011 Bowl Championship Series National Championship.
From watching Newton’s game tapes, there is an awful lot to like but Panthers fans need to be patient. He is coming out of a spread offence and has overwhelming presence and athletic ability. The footwork and anticipation in the NFL passing tree will be
new to him, but Carolina will take good care of tailoring their offence to utilise Newton’s potential to the fullest.
They will most likely be running the football more and will have to work harder on the offensive line to protect their quarter-back more, just like the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens did with Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco, respectively.
The Panthers will have to. They ranked last in passing yards during the 2010 season with an average of 143.1 passing yards per game. In total offensive yards and red zone efficiency, the Panthers were last. They did a lot better in terms of rushing yards,
ranking 13th with 115.4 yards per game average. The Panthers also allowed a lot of rushing yards, ranking 23rd with an average of 123.8 yards allowed per game.
This is how the NFL Draft works. The most electrifying player goes to the worst team and gives that team and their fans hope. When you watch Newton’s films, you don’t see a lot of throws from the pocket, which is not typical in the NFL.
In conclusion, the Carolina Panthers used their number one draft pick to draft Cam Newton, quarter-back from Auburn University. The remaining article about the first round draft selections in the 2011 National Football League Draft, held at Radio
City Music Hall in New York City, will be discussed in the next part of this article. Take a look!
