2011 National Football League mock draft - Part 1
With the 2011 National Football League Draft fast approaching, it is only suitable that we have our own mock draft to see which players will be picked in the draft. They had amazing seasons during their final year at their respective colleges or they displayed
exceptional talent at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine resulting in these players not lasting long in the Draft.
If I was Ron Rivera, head coach of the Carolina Panthers, I would pick Da’Quan Bowers, as my number one overall pick. Rivera himself might go with the defensive end from Clemson University because he would be better off going with improving his defence and
go with the guy who can affect the passer, stop the run, is relentless and can stop the play on every down. This is the player for that job. Coming in at six feet four inches and 280 pounds, Bowers can, and will, wreak havoc on every single play.
Bowers has had a great season at Clemson. A junior coming to the draft, he was ranked as the number one player in the country out of high school in 2008 and is the first player from Clemson to receive such an honour. He was also given an honourable mention,
as an All-Freshman in the same year. Bowers is described best as “the closest thing to Reggie White and Bruce Smith.”
In 2010, he was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year for 2010 and was then named the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy a week later. The Trophy is awarded to the best defensive player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association
and is named after Bronko Nagurski, who played for the University of Minnesota and then the Chicago Bears.
The second overall pick will go to the Denver Broncos and a good player for them to use their draft pick on is corner-back Patrick Peterson. The six foot one, 220 pound corner-back and return specialist from Louisiana State University is very dangerous when
he gets his hands on you. When he does get a hold of you, he will not let you get away under any circumstance. He is great at the moment of truth, when he has a chance to make the play, he does. When he manages to get the ball in his hands, he turns them into
touch-downs going the other way. John Fox, head coach of the Broncos, wants to go with improving his defence and Peterson is a player that fits his scheme very well.
Peterson was named as the 2007 High School Defensive Player of the Year after compiling 21 tackles and five interceptions in his senior year. On offence, he had 733 rushing yards and 11 touch-downs, one on a punt return, one on a kick return and nine rushing.
He also played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in 2008.
Where Bowers was the number one prospect out of high school, Peterson was ranked eighth.
