2011 National Football League mock draft - Part 3
This is the third part of a series of articles discussing the top ten draft picks in April’s 2011 NFL Draft. We finish up here with Cam Newton from Auburn University, having discussed him and Patrick Peterson from Louisiana State University in the
second part.
Newton was named the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association National Football Champion, the 2010 Associate Press Player of the Year, and won the Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award and Manning Award in 2010.
He also led Blinn College to the Bowl Championship Series Championship Game and winning in 2009, and then also winning the same with Auburn in 2011.
On top of that, Newton has been working with George Whitfield, Jr. since January. For those of you who do not know who he is, he coached Akili Smith, who was picked third overall in the 1999 NFL Draft and Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarter-back Ben Roethlisberger,
who was picked 11th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. Roethlisberger, also known as “Big Ben”, led the Steelers to their third Super Bowl appearance this season and has won two of them.
Newton also has football in the family. His father, Cecil Newton, played for the Dallas Cowboys for two seasons as a strong safety while his older brother, Cecil Newton, Jr., plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars as a centre.
The number four overall pick goes to the Cincinnati Bengals and they will most likely take wide-receiver A.J. Green. The University of Georgia Bulldogs wide-receiver will most likely be taken early on as well, since he is a play-maker. Coming in a six feet
four inches and 211 pounds, when this guy gets the ball in his hands he just takes off. He can run after he catches and is one of the big tall players that are hard to cover on the outside.
In his freshman season, Green had 56 receptions for 963 yards and eight touch-downs, a school record for a freshman. He had the most receiving yards in the Southeastern Conference and the third highest in school history. In his sophomore season, he had 47
receptions for 751 yards and six touch-downs, even though he missed the last three games of the season due to an injury. He has been compared to Arizona Cardinals’ wide-receiver Larry Fitzgerald and Tennessee Titans’ wide-receiver Randy Moss and is a top prospect
for the 2011 NFL Draft.
The fifth overall pick features the first line-backer of the Draft. Von Miller will most likely be going to the Arizona Cardinals since he fits into exactly where head coach Ken Whisenhunt wants to go with his team. This guy can play on the outside of the
line of scrimmage and is virtually unstoppable. You can see from his performance at the Senior Bowl for the Texas A&M University Aggies that he can also play behind the line of scrimmage and is relentless in the way that he plays. He rushes the passer, gets
very physical, is passionate about his playing and tries to put the hurt on opponents.
