2011 Open 13: Stephane Bohli and Edouard Roger Vasselin qualify for main draw
Wrapping up the qualifying round for the event, four players made their way into the main draw of the Open 13 in Marseille, France on Monday.
Kicking off the qualifying finals for the day was local Romain Jouan as he took on Dutch Thomas Schoorel. Playing each other for the first time, Schoorel was able to counter
the home crowd advantage his opponent enjoyed as he dismissed Jouan in straight, yet extremely close sets.
Taking a little less than ninety minutes, Schoorel struck a resounding total of 17 aces and lost only 8 points on service. Successfully converting one of four break opportunities,
Schoorel was able to clinch a close 7-5, 7-6(1) victory. Schoorel had earlier defeated Andrej Martin and upset eighth seeded local, Vincent Millot. Schoorel moves on ahead to take on German Tobias Kamke.
Joining Schoorel in the main draw is Russian Andrey Kumantsov as he took 84 minutes to dismiss Belgian Ruben Bemelmans in straight sets.
A perfect 100% first serve winning percentage by Kumantsov in the first set secured an easy 6-4 win for him in the opener. However, the Belgian put up some resistance in
the second set as he cashed in on the unforced errors by the error prone Russian. Pushing the set into a tiebreaker, Bemelmans engaged the Russian in a neck-to-neck run, keeping the score tied for fourteen points. It was only on the fifteenth point that the
Russian caught himself a break as he clinched two successive points securing a 9-7 win in the tiebreaker. Kumantsov now enters the main draw where he will face local wildcard entrant, Nicolas Mahut.
Following these two on the courts was the one of two remaining seeds in the qualifying draw, the third seeded local, Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Engaging compatriot Alexandre
Sidorenko in the qualifying final, Vasselin was able to do away with his hard hitting countryman in little over an hour.
Although Vasselin struck only one ace to Sidorenko’s nine, he successfully converted three of six break opportunities and lost only 13 of 51 points on service to clinch
a twin set score victory of 6-3, 6-3. Vasselin moves on ahead to take on another compatriot, Arnaud Clement.
Also making it into the main draw was the qualifying seventh seed, Stephane Bohli as he dismissed local Maxime Teixeira in straight sets. Banking on the home court advantage,
Teixeira put up a fight in the opener, pushing the set into a tiebreaker. Holding the local to one point, Bohli was able to clinch a 7-1 victory in the tiebreaker and go one up in the set score.
Leading the set score, Bohli shattered his opponent’s confidence as he held him to ten points and raced to a breadstick victory.
Taking one hour and eleven minutes, Bohli struck seven aces and lost a total of only four of forty four points on service. Successfully converting three of four break opportunities,
Bohli was able to clinch a 7-6(1), 6-1 win for himself. Moving into the main draw, Bohli will play the Croat giant, Marin Cilic.
