2011 Open GDF Suez 2nd round: Wickmayer clears second round against Zakopalova
Belgian tennis player, Yanina Wickmayer, scored a very easy victory against Klara Zakopalova, of the Czech Republic, winning the match 6-1, 6-3 in just over fifty-five minutes. This was the shortest match yet played in the second round.
21 year old, Yanina Wickmayer, is a Fed Cup team member, who recently helped Belgium to defeat the United States team at the quarterfinals.
She is currently world number 26, and has won three career titles so far. Wickmayer, who lives in Deurne, Belgium, joined the WTA circuit in 2004. The right-handed tennis player has won eight out of the eleven matches she has played so far in 2011.
Klara Zakopalova is a 28 year old right-handed player, currently residing in Prague, Czech Republic. She turned pro in 1999, five years before Wickmayer.
Currently, ranked world number 35, she has won two career titles in the course of her career. Zakopalova has played seven matches in 2011, winning four of her contests.
The match was obviously a simple one for Wickmayer, who needed less than an hour to defeat Zakopalova. Both players scored two aces in the match, but Zakopalova was unable to challenge Wickmayer to any break points. On the contrary, the Belgian player forced
Zakopalova to fight off ten break points, six of which she successfully deflected.
Yanina Wickmayer was in total control of the first set, barely breaking a sweat as she challenged her Czech opponent to a nightmare match. She obviously had no intention of allowing Zakopalova to break through and she closed the first set with a fry.
In the second set, she appeared to be somewhat tired, while Zakopalova made an effort to make up for the first set. Although, the world number 35 was able to win three games, it was not enough to combat Wickmayer, who closed the match with 6-3 in the second
set. Their head to head record is now 1-0 to Yanina Wickmayer.
Wild card Wickmayer, who is also the seventh seed at the Open GDF Suez, will now compete in the quarterfinals of the tournament. She is scheduled to face fourth seed Petra Kvitova, who defeated Czech compatriot, Barbara Zahlavova Strycova, in three sets
6-4, 6-7(6), 7-6(9).
Wickmayer defeated Russian, Elena Vesnina, in the first round of this tournament, emerging victorious after saving a break point at 4-2 down in the opening set. The final scoreline was 7-6(1), 6-2.
Kvitova meanwhile, began her campaign by defeating Russian Vesna Manasieva 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round.
Kvitova and Wickmayer have played against each other four times before this, with their head to head record tipping in Wickmayer’s favour with 4-1. Despite this, Kvitova has been producing consistent results and may be in better form, so the match is expected
to go into a tie-breaking set before a winner is decided.
