2011 Open GDF Suez 2nd round: Dokic defeats Petrova, makes it to quarterfinals
Australian tennis player, Jelena Dokic, defeated Russian pro, Nadia Petrova, in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4) at the second round of the 19th edition of the Open GDF Suez, in a match, which lasted a little over one hour and twenty-nine minutes.
Numerous match previews selected 28 year old Nadia Petrova as a clear winner, as she was ranked a hundred spots over her Australian opponent.
In addition to this, their last meeting in which, Dokic defeated Petrova, was in 2001. In the intermittent ten years, Petrova has made significant progress.
Currently world number 20, Petrova is a right handed player, who resides in Monte Carlo, Monaco. She turned pro over ten years back, joining the Women’s Tennis Association [WTA] circuit in 1999. She has played six matches so far this year, winning two of
them. Over the course of her career, she has won nine titles.
On the other hand, 27 year old Jelena Dokic is world number 120. She also lives in Monte Carlo, and plays right handed tennis. Her professional career as a tennis player began a year before Petrova’s in 1998.
So far, she has played six matches in 2011. She has won three of these matches. Her total number of career titles is five.
The first set was not an easy one for Dokic, but she managed to subdue Petrova with six aces. She saved the only break point, which Petrova was able to challenge her with, whereas the Russian battled off three of four break points.
Petrova seemed to realize the stakes in the second set, which was far more competitive. She scored points with seven aces, and took Dokic to match point four times before the Australian won the match.
The two players now have a head to head record of 2-0 to Dokic. Their last meeting was on the hard courts of Toronto in 2001, when Dokic was rated world number 15. She was seeded tenth at the tournament, while Petrova was 38. The Australian won the match
6-7(5), 7-5, 6-1 to move ahead to the round of thirty-two.
Dokic defeated Czech player, Lucie Safarova, in the first round of the match, whereas fifth seed Nadia Petrova emerged victorious over French wild card, Virginie Razzano.
Jelena Dokic will now be competing against Belgian tennis player, Kim Clijsters, who is the first seed of the tournament. Clijsters recently won her first Australian Open title, and received a bye in the first round. She defeated German tennis pro, Kristina
Barrois, in the second round, winning the match 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
If Clijsters defeats the Australian player, she will reach the semi-finals of the Open GDF Suez and overtake Caroline Wozniacki as world number 1 on the ranking charts.
