2011 Players Choice Award winners announced – MLB News
The 2011 Players Choice Award winners expressed their delight and gratitude for the honour bestowed upon them. On Thursday, Curtis Granderson, Justin Verlander, Michael Young, Mark Trumbo, Clayton Kershaw, Jacoby Ellsbury were honoured for their outstanding
performances in the respective fields in 2011.
The American League’s Best Starting Pitcher Award went to Justin Verlander who had the most wins in 2011 with 24 wins. He had an astounding record of having 250 strike-outs with 2.40 ERA and won the pitching’s triple-crown as well.
For him it was an honour. “With all the talk about [whether] a pitcher [should] be able to win MVP or a top player award, I think it shows a lot of support for my fellow players to be able to vote for me.”
Verlander also stated he was speechless for having been given this award. Young, on the other hand, also got a nomination for the 2011 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award.
Young struck his characteristic note of humbleness for the compliment that he received. “Any time you are recognized by your peers, it's the ultimate compliment," Young said.
Michael Young had an amazing record in 2011 with a .338 average, having 106 RBIs with 11 home-runs, scoring a total 88 runs with 213 hits to his credit. While in the post-season he had a .257 average with 16 hits.
Los Angeles Angels’ rookie Mark Trumbo got one of the great and important awards of his career for being bestowed with the honour of being the Outstanding Rookie in American League. With his 149 appearances in 2011, he had a .254 average with 65 runs to
his credit, having had 29 home-runs.
"I couldn't be happier," Trumbo told MLB Network. "It's something that holds a tremendous amount of importance to me."
Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers was awarded the National League’s Outstanding Pitcher Award for 2011. Kershaw had outstanding record having a 2.28 ERA with 21 wins to his credit, losing only five games with a .98 WHIP.
The truly deserving and hard working players were honoured with these awards. Their competitive spirit is what delivers excitement for both the players and the fans of MLB.
