2011 Qatar Ladies Open: Top seeded Jarmila Groth qualifies for main draw
Qualifying top seed Aussie Jarmila Groth sailed into the main draw of the 2011 Qatar Ladies Open on Monday after doing away with qualifying sixth seed Timea Bacsinszky.
Enjoying straight, though hard fought, sets victories in all three rounds, Groth made her way into the main draw to setup a clash with Dominika Cibulkova.
Groth had started her run against Tunisian wildcard entrant, Selima Sfar. Securing a hard fought 7-6(5) victory in the opener, Groth was able to move on ahead with a breadstick win in the second set. Meeting Groth in the second round was compatriot and lower
ranked, Jelena Dokic. Coupling 6-2 in the opener with a 6-1 in the second set, Groth was able to move into the qualifying finals where she played Bacsinszky.
Going toe to toe in the first set, the pair pushed the set into a tiebreaker. However, the top seed doing justice to her position was able to clinch an early lead before wrapping up the opener with a 7-2 win. The sixth seeded Swiss continued her resistance
against the Aussie in the second set, keeping the score tied for eight games. Breaking service in the ninth game and then winning the tenth on her own, Groth was able to maintain her no set loss record and find her way into the main draw.
Surviving Bacsinszky’s onslaught of eight aces, Groth was able to cash in on the Swiss’ six double faults as she took a little over ninety minutes to secure her position in the main draw.
Joining Groth in the main draw is Russian Vera Dushevina. Seeded eighth in the event, Dushevina bounced back from being one set down against the qualifying second seed, Klara Zakopalova to gain acceptance in the main draw.
Holding Dushevina to seven points, Zakopalova successfully converted 3 of 3 break opportunities to clinch a 6-2 win for herself. Trailing the set score 0-1, Dushevina found her footing in the second set. Fighting back hard, the Russian pushed the set into
a tiebreaker. Continuing her onslaught, the Russian was able to clinch the second set 7-3.
With a set a piece, the match entered the decider. However, an energized Dushevina was more than Zakopalova could handle. Holding the Czech to twelve points, Dushevina was able to clinch a breadstick win for herself in the decider and gain acceptance in
the main draw. Dushevina moves on ahead to play Maria Martinez Sanchez.
Also making her way into the main draw was the qualifying third seed, Shuai Peng. Playing Elena Vesnina, Peng took a little over ninety minutes to secure a twin set victory of 6-3, 6-3. Losing only 26 of 57 points on service, Peng successfully converted
6 of eleven break opportunities to move on ahead into the main draw, where she plays Kaia Kanepi.
Qualifying seventh seed, Bojana Jovanovski also made her way into the main draw as survived a mid match lapse against Kateryna Bondarenko to prevail 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.
