2011 Russian Youth Championship concludes in Saratov - Junior Fencing News
The 2011 Russian Youth Fencing Championship that was inaugurated on April 28 has concluded yesterday, on May 3, in Saratov, Russia.
The event included both individual and team competitions in the Men and Women discipline. On the closing day, the Under-24 event covered two team events in the Men’s sabre and Men’s epee categories.
The closing day of the youth championship was fortunate for the Muscovites, as they sealed victory in both the team competitions.
In the Men’s Sabre team competition, a total of twelve teams had taken part in the event, including two teams from Moscow.
In the quarter-finals, team Moscow-1 comprising of Maxim Botezatu, Trofim Grand, Camille Ibragimov and Paul Smith defeated Novosibirsk Region-2 by a 45-36 score. Moscow -2 also headed into the semi-finals by winning a head-to-head fight
against St. Petersburg, at 45-44.
In the semi-finals, the two Muscovite teams faced-off each other and Moscow-1 trounced their counterpart team, at 45-40.
In the finals, Moscow-1 battled against the St. Petersburg team, ending victorious with a commanding 45-35 win. Command
In addition, the bronze-medal play-off took place between Moscow-2 and Novosibirsk Region-1, in which the Muscovites missed the medal by a single-win point, at 45-44.
A total of nineteen teams took part in the championship category for the Men’s Epee team competition. A similar scenario was also seen in this event for the Muscovites, but this time, both the home teams made it into the final round.
In the quarter-finals, Moscow-1 consisting of Antonio Adamo, Vadim Anokhin, Sergei Bida and Philip Tymoshenko defeated Leningrad Oblast by a 45-36 score, whereas Moscow-2 ousted the Moscow Region-1 by 45-34, surging into the semi-final round.
The first Russian team faced-off the Samara region-1 in the next round, defeating their opponent at a dominating score difference, at 45-32. Team Moscow-2 that included Alexei Kalinin, Liu Chang Shang, Anton Nikolsky and Dmitry Gusev trounced Bashkortostan-1
at a similar 45-35 score gap.
Both the Muscovite teams came face-to-face in the finals. Moscow-1 proved their strength by beating their counterparts, at 45-40. The win gave the team their second gold medal of the day.
On the other hand, the third position bout was played between Bashkortostan-1 and Samara Region-1, in which both the teams fiercely battled for a medal finish. Bashkortostan-1 took the winning point at 45-44, in a scintillating finish to end up with a silver-medal
win.
Securing a podium place was important for each individual and also for the teams, as it would qualify them for the upcoming youth championship in Kazan, in May. All the participant teams will head back home, departing from the venue today.
