2011 Russian Youth Championship continues in Saratov: Fencing News
The 2011 Russian Youth Fencing Championship was inaugurated on April 28 in Saratov, Russia. This event will get concluded until May 3, including both the individual and team competitions in men and women discipline. From April 29 - May
1, the Under-24 event covered two individual and four team events in the three weapon disciplines.
On April 29, two team events namely Women's foil and Women's sabre took place.
A total of 12 teams took part in the Women’s foil team competition. A team from Bashkortostan-1 stole the show at the event when they defeated the RT-2 in the quarter-finals by 45-33. This team comprised of Adeline Zagidullina, Anastasia
Ivanova, Veronika Lavrenova and Julia Nagimova.
In the semi-final round, the team faced-off Moscow Oblast and smashed their opponents by a 45-26 score difference, hence, progressing into the final round.
The final match was fought between Bashkortostan-1 and the Moscow-1team, comprising of Sophia Balandin, Christina Novalinska, Alexander Petrov and Diana Yakovleva. Finally, Bashkortostan-1 won with a visible score difference at 45-35, hence,
clinching the gold medal.
In the third position decider bout, RT-1 defeated Moscow Oblast by 45-29 score points.
In Women's sabre team, 9 teams participated in which St. Petersburg-1 grabbed the event’s gold medal on defeating Moscow-1 by 45-39, which comprised of the recent gold-medalist in senior national championship Anna Herman, the winner of
last day’s women foil individual’s Anastasia Ivanova and the third team member Veronica Danilova.
The bronze-medal bout was won by Moskovskaya Oblast with a defeat to St. Petersburg-2.
On April 30, the youth championship featured men’s foil individuals and women’s epee individuals.
A total of 64 male fencers participated in the individual foil discipline from all around Russia. Amazingly, the European youth champion Arthur Ahmathuzin also took part in this event, representing Bashkortostan.
This event is a qualification step towards the upcoming European Youth Championship in Kazan, which is why many International U-24 Russian fencers also caught sight of it.
Ahmathuzin defeated his native companion Rinat Faizullin in the final bout by 15-8, clinching gold for himself.Moreover, the bronze-medal win was shared between Evgeni Filippov from St. Petersburg and Timur Arslanov from Bashkortostan.
In the Women's epee individuals, 56 fencers took part in the competition. It was amazing to see the world-class fencers play in a junior championship, displaying a high level of fencing competition among the female players.
Out of the lot, the event’s two finalists named Yan Zverev from Moscow, Tatiana Andryushina from Moscow Region and one of the bronze-medal holders Olga Kochneva from Moscow had also previously played in the international senior championships,
representing Russia.
In the final bout, Zvereva single-handedly won over Andryushina by 15-9. Moreover, Kochneva shared her bronze with Maya Guchmazova from North Ossetia-Alania, at the end of the competition.
