2011 Russian Youth Championship underway in Saratov: Fencing News
The 2011 Russian Youth Fencing Championship was inaugurated on April 28 in Saratov, Russia. This event will conclude on May 3, including both the individual and team competitions in men and women discipline. From May 1-2, the Under-24
event covered two individual and two team events in both men and women disciplines.
On May 1, the Men’s Foil team and Women’s Epee team events were held among the U-24 juniors. This day turned out fortunate for the Moscow fencers, winning a full set of medals with gold and silver from Women’s Epee and bronze medal
in Men’s Foil.
In the Men’s Foil competition, a total of 13 teams had taken part out of which team Bashkortostan-1 was a stand-out, comprising of Timur Arslanov, Roman Kutz, Timur Safin and Rinat Faizullin.
In the semi-final round, they defeated their own second team Bashkortostan-2 with a single-handed win at 45-22. While, St. Petersburg defeated Moscow-1 by 45-27 scores in the same round.
In the final round, the talented Bashkortostan-1 trounced St. Petersburg with an obvious score difference at 45-35, defeating the team that included Oleg Drobyshev, Andrew Pavinsky, Evgeniy Filippov and Dmitriy Tseyler.
On the other hand, Moscow-1 won the third position match, after beating down Bashkortostan-2 by a similar 45-35.
In Women’s Epee team competition, total 12 teams took part in the U-24 event. Moscow-1 displayed their abilities to the utmost on defeating St. Petersburg at a close 45-41, in the semi-final round. Moreover, Moscow-2 was also playing
the semi-finals against North Ossetia-Alania, qualifying in to the finals by 35-45 score win.
Both the teams from Moscow played the final round, in which Moscow-1 ended up victorious at 45-34 score win.
However, the third place was secured by St Petersburg on defeating North Ossetia-Alania at 45-32.
On May 2, Men’s Epee Individual and Men’s Sabre Individual competition took place.
A total of 92 fencers had participated in the first event of the day. Leningrad’s Roman Petrov gave a tough time to his opponents during the competition.
He played against Mikhail Klimov from Nizhny Novgorod in the quarter-finals, beating him down at 15-10.
In the semi-finals, he defeated Alexei Kalinin from Moscow by an easy 15-7 score win. On the other hand, RT’s Alexander Giants trounced Vadim Anokhin from Moscow by a tight 15-13 score win.
Giants gave a very hard time to Petrov in the finals, battling a cut-throat at 14-14, when Petrov managed to hit the winning shot at his opponent, clinching gold in Men’s Epee.
In Men’s Sabre individuals, total 57 fencers participated in the event. Kamil Ibragimov from Moscow kept turning lucky in almost six of his seven fights, winning each round by just one or two points.
At 14-14 scores, Ibragimov defeated Yefim Hoffman from St. Petersburg by striking the leading hit prior to his opponent, qualifying into the final round.
However, when the Moscow fencer played his seventh last fight, the tables had turned in favour of Ivan Anikin from Novosibirsk, who sealed his golden win at 15-13 over Ibragimov at the end. The event will
conclude on May 3.
