2011 Sony Ericsson Open - ATP Seeds Part V: Andy Murray
World Number 5 Andy Murray
British player Andy Murray has been seeded fifth at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open, due to his current ranking of World Number 5. The Scottish pro is the highest-ranked tennis player to emerge from Britain since Tim Henman. He has
been part of the Association of Tennis Professionals for six years, having joined the ATP Tour circuit in 2005. The right-handed pro is currently 23 years old, and is yet to win his first Grand Slam title. His career-high ranking is World Number 2, which he
held for a brief period of time in 2009. He has won a total of 16 titles over the course of his career.
Andy Murray made his debut at the Miami Masters in 2006, when they were known as the ATP Masters Series Miami. He was ranked World Number 41 at the time, and could not proceed past the first round where he was ousted by Stanislas
Wawrinka of Switzerland.
Despite this poor first showing, Andy Murray made up for it in his next appearance at the Miami Masters in 2007. His ranking had risen to World Number 12 by this time, and he received a bye in the first round of the event. He defeated
players Paul Goldstein, Robert Kendrick and Paul Henri-Mathieu to reach the quarterfinals against Andy Roddick, who retired halfway through the match. Murray’s next opponent was Serbian tennis pro Novak Djokovic, who defeated him in straight sets in the semi-final.
Murray lost his second round match at the Miami tournament again in 2008, receiving a bye in the first round but falling to Croatian pro Mario Ancic in the second. However, once again, he performed spectacularly in the next year,
2009. Murray managed to defeat players Juan Monaco, Nicolas Massu, Viktor Troicki, Fernando Verdasco and Juan Martin Del Potro to reach the title match against Novak Djokovic. The Scot took revenge on Djokovic for his 2007 defeat, thrashing his opponent in
straight sets to win the title.
His performance at the 2010 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami was mediocre at best. He was ranked World Number 3 at the time, and received a bye in the second round only to suffer a straight-sets defeat at the hands of American
pro Mardy Fish.
Andy Murray began this year particularly well, eliminating all opposition at the Australian Open to reach the title match against Djokovic. However, the Serb defeated him in straight sets and the loss seems to have broken his spirit.
He took part in the Rotterdam only to be defeated by Marcos Baghdatis in his opening round, after which American qualifier Donald Young managed to defeat him in straight sets in the second round of the Indian Wells event. If he does not regain control over
himself, Andy Murray's chances for success at Miami are minimal.
