2011 Sony Ericsson Open - ATP Seeds Part VII: Tomas Berdych
World Number 7 Tomas Berdych
World Number 7 Tomas Berdych has been seeded seventh at the 2011 Miami Masters, also known as the Sony Ericsson Open or the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami. The player, who hails from the Czech Republic, is currently 25 years
old and has won a total of five career titles. His highest ranking during his career was World Number 6, which he achieved last year. The right-handed pro is coached by Tomas Krupa.
Tomas Berdych made his first appearance at the Miami Masters in 2005, when he was ranked World Number 46. The Czech pro confronted Arnaud Clement of France in the first round, and conceded the match by retiring after losing the
first set. His next two appearances were much more satisfactory, as his ranking rose significantly and he managed to make it to the third round both years.
In 2008, Berdych participated in the ATP Masters Series Miami event as World Number 10, receiving a bye into the second round. He managed to defeat players Sam Querrey, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Andreev without
dropping a set to make it to semi-final of the tournament. Here, he was ousted by World Number 1 Rafael Nadal.
In 2009, the Czech pro was ranked World Number 22. Although his ranking had slipped considerably, he was still seeded at the tournament. He began his run in the second round, defeating Russian pro Mikhail Youzhny to set up a third
round meeting against James Blake of America. He cleared this match only to be defeated by World Number 3 Novak Djokovic in the fourth round.
Last year, Berdych made his most successful appearance at the Miami tournament yet. He was ranked World Number 20, and defeated players Thiemo de Bakker, Horacio Zeballos, Roger Federer, Fernando Verdasco and Robin Soderling to
reach the final against America’s Number 1 Andy Roddick. Roddick, who is the current World Number 8, proved to be too formidable an opponent for Berdych and he lost the chance for the title in straight sets. Nevertheless, he was applauded for his efforts and
it was no doubt a great achievement for the player.
Tomas Berdych has participated in six tournaments so far this year, making it to the quarterfinals of the first five events. He also made semi-final appearances in two of these five tournaments. In addition to this, the player
also won one of his two Davis Cup tie matches against Kazakhstan. His last tournament was the 2011 BNP Paribas Open, where he made it to the fourth round before being ousted in the fourth round. His previous performances are indicative of a good performance
at the Miami Masters.
