2011 Sony Ericsson Open - ATP Seeds Part XIX: Sam Querrey
World Number 21 Sam Querrey
At World Number 21, Sam Querrey is currently the third-highest ranked American player on the Association of Tennis Professionals. He has been playing tennis professionally for almost five years, having joined the ATP in 2006. The
right-handed player is 23 years old, and is currently coached by Alex Reichel and David Nainkin. His highest ranking yet is World Number 17, which he accomplished earlier this year. The American pro has won a total of six career titles so far.
Querrey has participated in the Miami Masters regularly since 2006, one year after he turned professional. The American was ranked World Number 386 at that time, and his first opponent at his Miami debut was countryman Alex Bogomolov
Jr. Querrey could not perform in this match, and he was defeated by Bogomolov in three sets.
The American’s next appearance at the tournament was in 2007, when he was ranked World Number 69. His first opponent was Igor Andreev, ranked World Number 200 at the time. Although Querrey defeated the Russian pro, he was outdone
by Roger Federer in the next round of the tournament.
His 2008 Miami Masters performance was similar to that of the year before. He was ranked World Number 50 at the tournament this year, and came up against Argentine pro Carlos Berlocq in the first round. He defeated the player,
who was ranked World Number 81 at that time, in straight sets. However, his run ended in the next round when World Number 7 Tomas Berdych defeated him in straight sets.
Sam Querrey took part in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami once again in 2009, when he was ranked World Number 47. The player took on Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in the first round, and defeated the player in easy straight
sets. However, he was unable to reproduce this result with Spanish pro Feliciano Lopez in the next round. The American pro fell to Lopez in three sets in the second round.
The American pro’s last showing at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami was in 2010, when he was ranked World Number 25. He was seeded at the tournament for the first time, and received a bye into the second round. However, he
did not benefit from this bye; the player was defeated by French pro Jeremy Chardy in the second round of the tournament in three sets.
Querrey has only been seeded once before at the event, and he has never made it past the second round of the Miami Masters. However, the player performed well at the Indian Wells tournament this year, making it to the fourth round.
He may be able to reproduce this result, especially since both tournaments are played on the same surface.
