2011 Sony Ericsson Open - ATP Seeds Part XXI: Marcos Baghdatis
World Number 24 Marcos Baghdatis
Marcos Baghdatis hails from Cyprus, and is currently ranked World Number 24 by the Association of Tennis Professionals. He is 25 years old, and has been playing tennis since the age of five.
The right-handed pro joined the ATP in 2003, and has been playing tennis on a professional level for almost eight years. His career-high ranking is World Number 8, which he reached four years ago in 2006. The player has won a total
of four titles during his career. Baghdatis is currently coached by Guillame Peyre.
This year, Baghdatis is the 22nd seed at the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami tournament. This is the fifth time that he will take part in the hard court event.
Marcos Baghdatis made his debut at the Miami Masters in 2006, when he was ranked World Number 26. The player received a bye in the first round, and scored an easy victory over Alex Bogomolov Jr. to proceed to the third round. He
was ousted by Russian pro Nikolay Davydenko at this stage of the tournament.
In 2007, Baghdatis was ranked World Number 18. He received another bye into the second round, where Juan Martin Del Potro ousted him in three sets with a bagel. The Argentine was ranked World Number 63 at the time of this upset.
Baghdatis went through a significant slump in the next two years, due to injury and lack of motivation. He did not take part in the Miami Masters in 2008, and returned to the tournament as World Number 105 in 2009.
This was the first time that Baghdatis did not receive a bye in the tournament. He met Latvian pro Ernests Gulbis in the first round, and upset the player in straight sets. However, he could not reproduce this performance against
French pro Paul-Henri Mathieu and did not make it to the third round of the tournament.
Baghdatis participated in the tournament again in 2010. He was ranked World Number 30, and received his third bye at the Miami Masters. The Cypriot player proceeded directly to the second round, where he defeated Argentine pro
Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets. He was ousted in the third round by Croatian pro Marin Cilic.
Marcos Baghdatis has never made it past the third round of the Miami Masters.
Despite his relatively high ranking, the fact remains that Baghdatis has been faltering for many weeks now. He lost two spots just this week, and his performance at the last 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Indian Wells was
mediocre to say the least. Consequently, the player is not expected to leave much of an impression at this event.
