Paolo Lorenzi ousts Joao Souza 6-4, 6-2
World number 154 Paolo Lorenzi of Italy beat world number 125 Joao Souza of Brazil in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the qualifying draw at the Sony Ericsson Open on Monday.
The Italian needed only 1 break of serve in the first set, winning it 6-4. He fired in 4 aces and 55 per cent of the first serves in the opening set. In comparison, Souza hit 2 aces and 75 per cent of the first serves. The Brazilian
could not save the only break point he faced in the first set. Whereas, Lorenzi saved all of the 6 break points he faced in the opening set.
After winning the first set, the Italian never looked back, breaking his opponent twice in the second set Lorenzi clinched a 6-2 victory.
The right handed delivered 58 per cent of the first serves in the second set and converted 82 per cent of them into points. He did not face a single break point in the set. Lorenzi converted 2 of the 4 break points he received
in the second set.
The Italian is slated to meet world number 145 Daniel Munoz-De La Nava of Spain in the second round. The Spanish cruised past world number 88 Horacio Zeballos of Argentina in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.
Alex Bogomolov Jr. battles past Jesse Levine 7-5, 3-6, 6-3
Alex Bogomolov Jr. of USA defeated his compatriot Jesse Levine in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to move to the second round of the qualifiers. The American took 1 hour and 56 minutes to oust his opponent.
Bogomolov broke Levine in the 11th game of the opening set and held his next service game, winning the set 7-5. He hit 2 aces and a single double fault in the first set.
After losing a tough opening set, Levine came back in the match as he broke his opponent once in the second set to win it 6-3. He delivered 73 per cent of the first serves, winning 79 per cent of the points on them. The American
did not face any break point in the second set.
In the final set, Levine broke his opponent to take a 2-0 lead. However, Bogomolov Jr. broke back immediately to level the set score at 2-2. He broke Levine again in the 8th game, winning the second set 6-3. The 27-year-old
fired in 2 aces and 72 per cent of the first serves in the third set.
Bogomolov Jr. will face world number 104 Simone Bolelli of Italy in the second round. The Italian defeated Izak Van Der Merwe of South Africa 6-2, 6-3 in the first round.
