2011 Sony Ericsson Open WTA Part 15: Ana Ivanovic and Aravane Rezai
World Number 19 Ana Ivanovic
Serbian tennis player Ana Ivanovic is currently ranked World Number 19, and has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association tour since 2003. She has spent over seven years on tour, and has won a total of ten WTA singles titles over the course of her
career. Ivanovic also managed to make it to the top spot as World Number 1, following her 2008 French Open victory.
Ana Ivanovic first took part in the Miami tournament in 2005, when she was ranked World Number 52. She posted remarkable results for a first-timer, defeating players such as Laura Granville, tenth seed Nadia Petrova, Czech pro Nicole Vaidisova and
sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova before falling to top seed Amelie Mauresmo in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
This was Ivanovic’s best showing at Miami. She participated in the tournament again last year, and was seeded twenty-fifth. She received a bye in the first round and proceeded to defeat French player Pauline Parmentier in her opening match. However,
she could not make it past Polish player Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round of the tournament.
This year, Ivanovic is seeded nineteenth at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open. She received a bye in the first round, and went on to defeat Kimiko Date Krumm in her opening match. Her third round match was against French pro Virginie Razzano, who retired
in the third set. She will now play against Kim Clijsters in the fourth round.
World Number 24 Aravane Rezai
French player Aravane Rezai is currently ranked World Number 24, after her ranking slipped two spots over the last week. The player is 23 years old, and has been playing as a professional tennis pro since 2005. She has spent over six years on tour,
and has won four WTA singles titles so far. Her highest ranking so far is World Number 15.
Rezai’s debut at Miami was in 2007, when she was World Number 54. The player did not leave much of a mark at the tournament, falling to Ekaterina Bychkova of Russia in the first round. She has never been able to make it past the second round of the
tournament.
Her latest showing at the event was in 2010, when she was seeded eighteenth at Miami. She received a bye into the second round, where she dropped her opening match against Petra Martic of Croatia. This is the best result that she has posted at the
Sony Ericsson Open so far.
This year, Rezai was seeded twentieth at the Sony Ericsson Open. She proceeded directly to the second round of the tournament against unseeded player Shuai Peng, who defeated her in straight sets with a bagel.
