2011 Sony Ericsson Open WTA Part 9: Agnieszka Radwanska
World Number 14 Agnieszka Radwanska
Agnieszka Radwanska is the world’s highest ranked Polish player at the moment, despite the fact that her ranking has fallen from World Number 10 to World Number 14 over the past week. She is 22 years old, and has been part of the
Women’s Tennis Association tour since 2005. The right-handed player currently resides in Krakow, Poland.
Her highest ranking so far is World Number 8, a spot she reached a year ago. Radwanska has set many records for her country, becoming the first Polish woman to win a WTA title. In addition to this, she has also won a total of four
titles and has reached the four Grand Slam quarterfinals. She is the highest paid Polish female tennis player.
Radwanska’s style of play is successful because she is an all-court player, and can produce good results on all three surfaces. Her best shot is her forehand, and she is known to be a defensive player. Her drop shot and lob are
also definite plus points. Comparisons have been made to Martina Hingis, as both players demonstrate a tactical knowledge of the court and play quite accurately during a match.
Radwanska produced good results at her first Miami tournament, which she played in 2007. She was ranked World Number 49 at that time, and confronted Shenay Perry of USA in her first round. She defeated the player to move on to
Chinese pro Zheng Jie, whom she ousted in straight sets. Her most significant win at the tournament was her third-round defeat of sixth seed Martina Hingis, after which Radwanska fell in the fourth round to Italian pro Tathiana Garbin.
The Polish player also performed well at the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open, where she was seeded tenth. The player received a bye into the second round, where she defeated Thailand’s Tamarina Tanasugarn before facing and defeating then-World
Number 19 Kaia Kanepi. She was ousted in the fourth round by Venus Williams, who was seeded fifth.
Agnieszka Radwanska’s latest showing at the Sony Ericsson Open was in in 2010, when she was ranked World Number 9. She was seeded sixth, and played her first match in the second round against Russian Ekaterina Makarova. The Polish
pro defeated her first opponent with a bagel in straight sets, and went on to oust twenty-fifth seed Ana Ivanovic in the third round of the tournament. Her next opponent was Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova, whom she defeated in straight set to reach the quarterfinals
against Venus Williams. Williams was seeded fifth this time, and defeated her in straight sets for the second year in a row.
Radwanska is seeded ninth at the Sony Ericsson Open this year, and will be facing Maria Kirilenko of Russia in the fourth round of the tournament. With Venus Williams absent from the competition due to injuries, the player may
have a good chance of proceeding past the quarterfinals of the event.
