2011 Toyota Cup Results for Day One: Host country, Japan, triumphs
The Toyota Cup was held last weekend, on December 10 and 11, at the Sky Hall, Toyota City in Japan. The tournament included apparatus finals for men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics discipline. The results of the meet were dominated by the host country
gymnasts.
The first day of the event featured men’s floor exercise, pommel horse and still rings finals. For women, the vault and uneven bars finals were conducted on day one.
Of the six titles up for grabs, four went to Japanese contenders while Korea and Vietnam settled for one each.
Women’s Vault Final
Vietnam’s Phan Thi Ha Thanh claimed the title with an average score of 14.300 points on her piked Rudi and double-twist Yurchenko. Rie Tanaka of Japan came in second with 13.275 points and German gymnast, Anja Rheinbay, took the bronze with 12.387 points.
Uneven Bars Final
The top two positions were both occupied by Japan. Asuka Teramoto (14.150) bested fellow countrywoman, Yumi Iizuka (13.550), and claimed the title. Asuka’s routine on the bars got a difficulty score of 6.3.
The bronze went to Korean gymnast, Park Ji Yeon, who scored 13.025 points.
Men’s Floor Exercise Final
Like the uneven bars final, the top two positions on the men’s floor exercise also went to Japan.
Nine-time World medallist, Kohei Uchimura, topped the rankings with 15.500 points. His routine attained a difficulty score of 6.5 and was performed in his customary neat way.
Makuto Okiguchi was close behind with 15.350 points and claimed the silver medal in the event. Again, like the uneven bars final, the third position was taken by Korea. Kim Hee Hoon took the bronze after receiving 14.450 points on his performance.
Pommel Horse Final
Kim Hee Hoon also brought Korea its only title from Day one at Toyota Cup. His score – 14.550 points – guaranteed him the gold medal on the pommel horse.
Fellow Korean gymnast Ko Jung Bo missed the honour by 0.200 points and secured the silver medal with 14.350 points.
Canadian gymnast, Jayd Lukenchuk had a bronze medal win in the event with 14.075 points to his claim.
Still Rings Final
Koji Yamamuro won the fourth title for Japan in this meet. He bested Netherlands’ Yuri van Gelder with a 0.550 points’ lead.
The bronze medal was obtained by Japanese gymnast, Kenya Kobayashi, who had a close shave with the silver but missed it by 0.025 points.
The first day of the competition closed on a triumphant note for Japan. However, two more event finals for women and three more event finals for men still remain to be contested.
Day two will wholly determine who reigned superior in the Toyota Cup. It is safe to say that Japan is already done with half its work in this regard.
