2011 Women’s ASP World Champion Carissa Moore nominated for 2012 Adventurer of the Year Award
Hawaii’s surfing sensation Carissa Moore has been added to the list of nominees for 2012 Adventurer of the Year Award, an honour given by National Geographic to an adventurer who has showcased the most adventurous spirit and gained a landmark achievement
in the previous year.
The 19-year-old Moore caught the attention of National Geographic after showcasing her asserting her dominance in women surfing during the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour. The seven-stop Tour turned out to be a memorable

This was Moore’s second year among the ranks of the elite ASP surfers, with her making her debut in the ASP World Tour in 2010. Despite being pitted against the likes of former four-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia and her compatriot
Sally Fitzgibbons, the Hawaiian walked away with the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award after finishing third at the end of the season. She returned to the 2011 edition of the elite tour to continue and complete her rise to glory.
The excellent performance during the 2011 season of the ASP World Tour get her an invitation to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing events Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa and the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, where she is an exceptional in an otherwise
all-men competition line-up.
Moore has begun to make huge contributions and playing an integral role in talking women’s surfing to an entirely new level. She has helped in the progression of the sport and helped it to gain the lime-light that was concentrated on male surfing before.
The winner of the Award will be determined through a poll that is currently running on the National Geographic site. The visitors of the site and fans of the adventurer can help take their favourite or most deserving nominee to victory through their votes,
which can be cast daily through January 18, 2012. Anyone unfamiliar with any of the nominees can find their details on the website, along with their photos and the reason why they are in contention for the National Geographic annual honour.
