2011 World Championships: Tey Seu Bock cautious about dark horse in Lee Chong Wei’s passage
Malaysia’s singles coach, Tay Seu Bock is cautious about the lower ranked shuttlers in the same half of the draw in which the World Number One and top seed Lee Chong Wei is placed. The coach says that the shuttlers from China will put up a good show against Chong Wei in the 2011 World Championships, starting from August 8, in England.
The 28 year-old Chong Wei, who has been playing remarkable badminton for the last couple of years, is expected to win the Men’s Singles crown this time. He will face at least two shuttlers from China in his way towards the title match and these two shuttlers will be the World Number Five Chen Long and World Number World Number Six Chen Jin, who is also the ruling World Champion.
Chong Wei is expected to take on Chen Long at the top-8 and Chen Jin at the top 4 stages. Tay Seu said, “Upsets are normal in the World Championships and they are registered in the earlier rounds. The quarter-final stage is very risky and we have two China players in Chong Wei's half.”
He further added, “China used to depend only on Lin Dan before but this is not the case anymore. Chen Jin won last year after Lin Dan lost in the quarter-finals and this proves that they can go far. Then, there are the likes of Peter Gade, who is very consistent, and Japanese players Sho (Sasaki) and Kasuzhi (Yamada) who have been creating a lot of upsets of late.”
The coach said that Chong Wei will focus on one match and will not think about the next until he wins the upcoming one. Chong Weil will have a tricky fight against Korea’s talented shuttler, Park Sung Hwan in the Men’s Singles third round and the matches will become tougher as the event will proceed.
Tey Bock is hopeful that Chong Wei will perform well if he manages to handle the pressure well of being the top seed in the draw of Men’s Singles in the mega event.
