2011 World Tennis Tournament: Viktor Troicki moves ahead
Serbian Viktor Troicki ousted local wildcard entrant Thomas Schooler in their opening clash at the 2011 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam on Monday.
Played at the Ahoy Rotterdam indoor sporting arena, the event is the first ATP 500 level tournament of the season.
Unseeded at the event, Troicki is appearing for the second straight year in the event. His 2010 run at the event was stopped in the first round when he was ousted by Jurgen Melzer.
Surpassing his previous best at the event, Troicki moved into the second round on Monday after doing away with Schooler in straight sets in 75 minutes.
A spectacular performance from Troicki in the opening set gave him an early lead for the match. Although he landed only a meagre 57 per cent of his first serves in the T, he scored 100 per cent off it. Striking five aces and converting 2 of 6 break points,
Troicki was able to secure a one set lead in the match.
In the second set, Schooler put up some resistance and pushed the set into a tiebreaker. However, holding the Dutch to one point, Troicki was able to sail into the lead and clinched the tiebreaker 7-1 and with that, the match.
The Serb struck a total of 13 aces and lost only 12 of 58 points on service as he moved into the next round. Troicki will play world number six David Ferrer or Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the second round.
Also joining Troicki in the next round is qualifier Dmitry Tursunov as he dismissed Kazakh Andrey Golubev in straight sets. Taking a little over 90 minutes, Tursunov enjoyed a 6-4 win in the opening set before wrapping up his straight sets victory with a
close 7-5 win in the second set.
Tursunov successfully saved all four break points and lost only 17 of 64 points on service to move on ahead in the event. He will next play either Tomas Berdych or Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez.
