2011 XIX Copa BBVA Colsanitas: Johansson defeats Meusburger
World number 98, Mathilde Johansson, scored an easy victory over Austrian tennis pro, Yvonne Meusburger, beating the world number 124 in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 at the second round of the XIX Copa BBVA Colsanitas tournament in Bogota.
Johansson, who is 25 years old, took just a little over an hour to defeat her 27-year old opponent. The French player did not score any aces throughout the match, but she drove Meusberger to eleven break points and successfully converted five of them.
In addition to this, she managed to save one of three break points on her own. The match consisted of eight service and return games apiece. Although the first set remained indecisive until the last point, Johansson scored a bagel over Meusberger by defeating
her 6-0 in the second set. She also won 63 percent of a total of 98 points during the match.
Yvonne Meusburger turned pro in 2004, four years after Johansson joined the WTA circuit. She has not won any WTA career titles yet, and this is the first tournament she is participating in this year. Johansson, on the other hand, played in the qualifying
rounds at Sydney.
She also qualified for the Australian Open, where she was defeated by tenth seed Shahar Peer in the first round.
This victory brings their head-to-head record to 4-0, as Johansson has defeated Meusberger thrice before. Their first meeting was at the 2005 Vittel event in France, where they competed against each other in the quarterfinals.
Johansson was un-seeded as world number 203, while then-world number 136 was seeded third. The French player scored her first victory over Meusberger on home turf defeating the Austrian 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Their next meeting was a year later, at the 2006 Mexico City event. Johansson was seeded second, while Meusberger followed immediately after as third seed yet again. Ranked world number 170, Johansson managed to defeat her opponent in straight sets 7-5,
6-2 at the hard court event’s final.
Johansson and Meusburger’s most recent meeting was at the 2007 Bordeaux event, where they met in the round of the last 32. Johansson was at that time world number 121, while Meusburger was seeded second as world number 63.
Despite the significant difference in rankings, Johansson managed to defeat the Austrian pro in three sets 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-1.
Mathilde Johansson recently broke into the Top 100, and is expected to improve her rankings over the course of this year. She proved her worth as a player in the first round of this tournament by defeating third seed Simona Halep in straight sets 7-6(5),
7-5 after making a recovery from a 3-1 down in the opening set.
She will now be competing against local wild card Catalina Castano, who defeated eighth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues in three sets in the second round of the Columbia tournament.
