2011 Yonex Chinese Taipei Open: Hsiao Ma Pai stuns Pui Yin Yip in the Women’s Singles quarter-final
Chinese Taipei’s Hsiao Ma Pai proved her mettle as she stormed into the semi-final after thrashing Pui Yin Yip of Hong Kong in the Women’s Singles quarter-final contest of the 2011 Yonex Chinese Taipei Open, in Chinese Taipei, on Friday, September 9.
Ma Pai showed her hard to earn skills in the quarter-final fight against the higher ranked Pui Yin, who was placed as the fifth seed in the Women’s Singles draw of the championship. The Taipei shuttler cheered the home crowd by delivering a terrific performance
in her match against the Hong Kong shuttler.
Pui Yin was the favourite on paper for this quarter-final battle, but Hsiao Ma destroyed the hopes of Hong Kong’s lady by winning the match in three sets after playing remarkable badminton for 60 minutes. The quarter-final win has boosted the confidence
of the local shuttler for the semi-final match.
In the first game of the match, Hsiao Ma played with a greater level of confidence as her cross-court fast drops and smashes put her opponent out of balance on numerous occasions. Pui Yin completely failed to anticipate the strokes of her local rival, who
was playing with wonderful precision. Hsiao Ma managed to win the first game with a huge margin of 21-13 in 18 minutes.
Pui Yin played a different game in the second set as she kept the bird parallel to the net and remained successful in setting up a high pace of the rallies. However, Hsiao Ma was also playing in the same style and consequently, both shuttlers remained close
until the ending points of the second game where Hsiao Ma made an error and lost the set with a 22-24 margin in 23 minutes.
Hsiao Ma employed all of her skills in the final set and played aggressive badminton. The support of the huge home crowd also motivated her to win the final set. She played flawless game with an incredibly fast speed and won it with the margin of 21-17,
in 19 minutes. She managed to grab the quarter-final win with a 21-13, 22-24 and 21-17 score in 60 minutes.
In the semi-final showdown, Hsiao Ma will compete against fourth seed, Ji Hyun Sung of Korea.
